I like bare bricks. Wallpaper is tacky and almost always depressing and paint is just kinda boring. I'm super glad wood paneling died.

I used to have a fishnet ceiling with roach clips hanging down. It complimented my blacklight posters and dragon drawings on woodgrain paneled walls nicely.

I assume any place with fake wood paneling smells like cigarettes.

Yes I like bare bricks too. A bare brick open fireplace is quite a common feature in old English pubs - so more popular than your earlier suggestion of human skin.

Yeah, wood panelling tends to be dark, and thus depressing, and I'm now turning away from wallpaper too, after Marie's neat remark about old ladies and geraniums.

I was waiting for someone to mention lincrusta dados, but now suspect it's not gonna happen:-

Spoiler for photo:

(Dado refers to the height, up to the waist-high dado rail. Lincrusta was the very thick textured wallpaper popular in the Edwardian era. The house I grew up in had a lincrust dado running round the front hall and up the staircase.

Even bare brick for a wall is nice. Like it has a bare bones, urban, industrial aesthetic that feels more wholesome than the sanitized suburban vibe of paint or wallpaper. And the chaotic texture of the brick mixed with the structured design of brickwork is very satisfying.

Brick houses are better than vinyl siding too. Vinyl siding is ghastly.

I'm not sure that we've ever agreed so much about anything before, Batlord!
Times 100% for everything you say.
In fact there's a kind of rule in architecture about honesty of materials, about seeing the material for what it is and what it does. Even breeze block walls can look ok, but they have to be built with extra care to look attractive, and that for me is the problem with vinyl cladding. It says, "The structural workmanship here is so flimsy/sloppy, we're covering it with plastic."

Castles are the only homes worth buying. Otherwise you might as well rent.
