A lot of you Americans seem to like this bare brick effort... shrug. Maybe you like covering your walls with pictures and posters?

Human skin.

As a matter of fact, I used to adorn my walls with rock posters from the sixties and seventies. Then a strange thing happened, I grew up. :D

...the bones of dead leprechauns, something kitschy.

"I grew up" - A nice touch of dry humour, rs !

Not just Americans; it became very popular when London's Victorian warehouses were being converted into flats/offices a few decades back. And of course exposed masonry was v popular in medieval times, especially for people like my ancestors who couldn't afford a decent tapestry. :(

I'm not a American, but I associate wall paper with old ladies and geraniums (prejudice, I know). I like walls to have one plain colour, but I cover my own with posters and African fabrics so it hardly counts as a plain wall

I like bare bricks. Wallpaper is tacky and almost always depressing and paint is just kinda boring. I'm super glad wood paneling died.

I used to have a fishnet ceiling with roach clips hanging down. It complimented my blacklight posters and dragon drawings on woodgrain paneled walls nicely.

I assume any place with fake wood paneling smells like cigarettes.

Yes I like bare bricks too. A bare brick open fireplace is quite a common feature in old English pubs - so more popular than your earlier suggestion of human skin.

Yeah, wood panelling tends to be dark, and thus depressing, and I'm now turning away from wallpaper too, after Marie's neat remark about old ladies and geraniums.

I was waiting for someone to mention lincrusta dados, but now suspect it's not gonna happen:-

(Dado refers to the height, up to the waist-high dado rail. Lincrusta was the very thick textured wallpaper popular in the Edwardian era. The house I grew up in had a lincrust dado running round the front hall and up the staircase.
