Maybe it's an "unconscious influence". You probably saw their works (or some similar works by other painters) somewhere, but you didn't know who the authors were. Many artists have been under that kind of non-explicit influences: musicians, painters, sculptors, architects, etc. I mean, their works are inspired by a certain style (for instance, Cubism) though sometimes they were not aware of who were the pioneers of such style.
