Not really sure. I usually just look at others works, and take from that. If I don't already know how to create something, I'll look for a tutorial, like this one for a neat example:



Modes, and Layers are probably the most important aspects of using PS. They're kind of the building blocks. Not really sure what you understand about it already without me going into a full on lesson though.
