never played hearthstone but my bf says it's pretty much a direct ripoff. i'm not sure what the mechanics were like, but there are premade themed decks available and you can also buy or win boosters so i've made some cool decks out of those. synergy is key to magic, imo.

I got into the beta (6 months or so after signing up...), played a bit... but for someone like me, who used to play a lot of mtg 20 or so years ago, without knowing the whole meta etc - it takes a lot of effort to get up to speed. Especially since they I think assume you don't need any of that, as you get a ton of decks and boosters for free...
I really, really like this wildcard (or whatever it's called) mechanic though. Finally there's a way to get specific cards you miss to build the deck you want, without spending a ton of $ and relying on Rngesus blessing you, so you can find it in a booster. |

Yes I love the wild card thing too, I have a good collection going. Two mythic (spent two already), three rares, 8 uncommon and 10 common. I'm hesitant to spend them but I guess it'll all be wiped eventually so I might as well. I'm just really enjoying deck building, and the drafts are super fun but it's annoying to pick against the computer.

Don't you have to invest real money to play drafts ? because that's what I was looking forward the most but I remember feeling disappointed that they wanted me to pay them for it.. in a closed beta.
But maybe I missed something ? |

You can get around paying for it if you complete the daily goals and stack coins and gems, but that's card to do. It's like 5000 gold to enter a draft, and you can win like 200 a day just playing one offs. Or you can buy gems and use those to play drafts (750 for a draft I think), and if you win 5 games you win those gems back. When they wipe everything we get to keep the gems, so I avoid using them. Long answer short, yeah I've put in like $20 so far.

All the gems you pay for (not the ones you win) are given back to you after the wipe. That's a way better deal than i initially thought. |

An example: Warlock is crazy popular right now. Bring 3 decks that Warlock has a less than 50% winrate against and never ban it. This puts you in a position to beat every opponent who runs warlock because they have to get a win with it. (This is a terrible example because Warlock is pretty much shitting on everything and there aren't 3 decks that can consistently beat it, but you get the point)
