Being a successful artist requires qualifications.

Ethnicity.

I'm not sure there's an answer to that. But I'm pretty sure it's not ethnicity.

Creativity and Musical Diversity.

As far as target markets go, I think ethnicity is extremely important. If you're to be successful as a musician it really helps to be part of the majority ethnic group because the majority of people DO tend to favour music from their own ethnic group.

Skill.

Do you mean someone who successfully creates art or one who creates art that has success?

yo guy, you left out technical skill and natural talent.... both are pretty important.

As long as the instrumentals are good...I'm not saying it's all you need, but it's a start.

Talent in some form is important, even in small doses.

I'm not saying it isn't. But having a lot of talent does not "automatically make something bearable".

Well duh. But I think bands with miminal talent who make lousy music are considerably worse than those with a lot of talent who make lousy music.
