The film works on two levels-
The fantastical world a child retreats into from life. The franco regime in spain circa 1940. The whole point of the film was too juxtapose these two worlds. The violence is neccessary in order for the child's journey to have real purpose (i.e her mothers health) An amazing film and was so pleased to see it in the cinema |

Well put, although I wouldn't say the girl's journey had a specific purpose apart from the need to feel special and escape the brutal reality.

I really liked that movie. I saw that movie in the theatres on opening night in my city. That weekend I also saw Children Of Men, which I liked a lot as well.
A few weeks later one of my friends burned me a copy of a screening copy of Pan's Labyrinth which he stole, so that was cool.

weak plot? what was the plot? chick goes to mansion, and uh, looks down in a cave and finds mr.tree guy? goes collects keys to boxes filled with knives that are useless? im saying, do you really think you opinion would have changed if that torture scene wasn't in there? they could have made a great childrens movie for kids, not for adults. They barely covered anything mystical at all, the movie took it self so seriously with all this civil war bull****. If i want to see a war movie, ill see a ****ing war movie. it seems as if they're where two different screenwriters with two different goals for the movie. acting was superb though edit: did you just make fun of harry potter >.<! |

That is a terrible review Matious-civil war bull****? Del toro the director grew up in Spain living in the aftermath of the franco regime, and maybe this is his way of dealing with difficulties in his childhood or Spanish culture in general.
This was never intended as a childrens movie, it's an Imaginary world a child might inhabit growing up in these circumstances. The violence in the film was what was going on in this time and to just gloss over it would be considered dishonest by DEL TORO. By all means you don't have to like the film, but your review lacked intelligence. |

I came into the film expecting a adventourous kids fairy tale, and you certainly have to admit thats what it seems like judgin by the trailers and art for the movie. So i was dissapointed at what little mystical events happened. But the more i think about it, i do have to give it credit for mixing two completely different worlds so well. and intertwining them like was done. lol, didnt del toro also direct "Hellboy" before this? hellboy>pans labrynth easily |

Thankyou for the reply MATIOUS-hope I did'nt offend you!
I admit that the Juxtaposition could freak you out a bit and yes Del Toro did direct HELLBOY-but has also done other Spanish films. He balances personal projects with Hollywood type crowd pleasers. Give PANS another viewing and watch it from a completely different perspective-it's an amazing film. |

I could have honestly never read a more inane review. You obviously were just too young to understand or appreciate the movie. Somethings just aren't meant for the younger minded (I apologize for sounding condescending), but its just like music. It's easier to learn to listen to Elliot Smith sing soothingly and appreciate the gentle melodies, than is to listen to Captain Beefheart and appreciate it for obvious reasons. Not everything should be a watered down fairy tale where Cinderella finds her Prince Charming, it would be a pretty boring movie. How about for a movie there's a kid with a scar and a magic wand who falls in love with another kid with a magic wand? That's happy ending. Leave Pan's Labyrinth alone, it was never meant to be a children's tale, and if you think it was mean to you TOTALLY missed the point of the movie. It's meant to work and multiple levels that combine to form something beautiful and unique that is constantly changing, like Captain Beefheart. If you take out all the levels you would be left with an extremely shallow movie that would have just been labeled another Narnia. And, in case you didn't know Pan's Labyrinth was written by Del Toro ALONE, and he was influenced by many ADULT books, not children's books. Watch the movie in 5 years or after you've done drugs, I promise you will be ashamed of yourself for thinking it should be a children's movie. I was felt so nausated and tired watching that movie because I was coming out of my drunken haze, and I still found it remarkable in so many levels. And I agree about the acting.
