1. Dont trade if your not getting an advantage (example: Knight for Knight queen for queen). Personally I always trade my bishops for there knights in the opening moves for the reason you said. Bishops are easy to keep track of while knights are certainly not.
2. Dont blitz to far, the point is to control the center 4 squares not win a pawn race.
