TUTG's psych thread
What is the deal w/ people today? I feel that way too many young people feel a lot of pressure to perform and behave like they are much older than themselves. People in their 20's want to act like they are in their 40's. I believe it was Socrates that said, 'the man who admits he knows nothing is much wiser than the man who claims to know it all.'
Why do people act so completely different in different environments? A person acts so completely different a Friday night out on the town than they do in church on Sunday morning. Is it so inconceivable to believe we could be who we are no matter where we go in life? Is that crazy to want a society like that? Why do people say they don't want to be like their parents, and then act exactly like them? Outwardly, we might wear much different clothes than, or listen to different music than our parents, yet we act very similarly in subtle ways. When we get in a frustrating situation, we might resort to the same negative thinking our parents do, and that is one area where we should strive to be completely different: in the way we deal with anger. When you think of dealing with anger, you're probably imagining an altercation of some kind with verbal sparring and pushing and shoving. However, think about how hard we have a tendency to be on ourselves. You knock over a drink, or something, and you say, 'Oh, I'm sorry, Oh, I'm so stupid,' you're taking your anxiety in the situation and turning it into anger against yourself. If you don't think something as seemingly harmless as that statement is harmful to your self esteem, you'd better think again. Our mind is like a computer and remembers all the information that is put into it-next time you hear yourself saying, 'Oh, I'm so stupid' think about how many times it rings in your head for the rest of the day. Why do people feel the need to constantly apologize for little accidents. Someone hands you a pencil or something, and you accidentally drop it-'Oh, I'm sorry' What are you sorry for? Being human, because that's all you're doing. What good does telling yourself you're stupid do? Honestly, I think most of the people on this site are probably smart enough to realize the hazardous effects that a lot of seemingly insignificant mental habits can have on you. Even though I talk a lot of trash, and admit to some pretty sick stuff, I'm human just like all of you. So essentially I just wanted to open up a psych. thread, so we could get some interesting rhetoric going on about the world, and one of the most influential things on it- people's minds. When I drop a pencil I usually start beating off.....
dangit APS, you made me lose my train of thought Alright, when I'm out driving during the day, I'm constantly being cut off and passed by people who are in a highly neurotic state, and basically when they get out or away from their loved ones, or their peers, they feel they can behave a certain way and get away with it. They probably don't even realize how they're behaving. It's like this book I'm reading that talks about how people are so unwilling to take an introspective look at themselves due to their conditioned mind. The conditioned mind tells us that we need to seek material things and approval of others for our happiness. To break free from our conditioned behavior is an exercise in insanity to some degree. It is terrifying to give up the ideas of old, and try to find new ones. Even though the new ones might seem rather gratifying, we are stripped naked and bare for awhile, to be so different from the herd. I suppose this explains why the herd is so huge, and there are so many people out there that seem to communicate and behave in very similar fashion. Is it wrong? Not if it makes you happy. Well, I do what makes me happy, and that is to think much differently than most people, and my tao, so to speak, is to be very introspective. Does that mean everyone should do it? Well, I hardly see how people getting to know themselves better could possibly hurt, I mean it might hurt the individual for a time, but over time it will do a lot of good for them, and society at large.
