^ you can use microsoft office but only the apple version, apps thata re ported to mac are usually watered down. The programs made specifically for mac are amazing. But windoes Vista is amazing, so i would steer clear of mac, because they are slowly sinking.

I have an Apple G5 desktop, before they made them super awesome (which was lame), and it has run perfectly for almost two years now. Never a virus, never a problem. I used to play Diablo 2 and Starcraft, which are full mac compatible. As far as reliabilty and security goes, Mac rules.

Don't get a laptop.

Desktop PCs are much better spec for your money (the same spec will often cost double in a laptop) and much easier to mend if they go wrong. Dell aren't really the ones to go for either. Go for an Intel processor though. for about £1000 now you can get some amazing desktops. Make sure you put £100 aside for the basic Microsoft office cause they don't come with it any more.

(if you're buying one soon, try getting one with XP. they all come with a free Vista upgrade but are about half the price of pre-installed vista PCs)

and id say definately get a PC over a Mac. Macs are made for music and pictures and stuff which is all very cool and fun until you want to want to do something useful with it - then it gets stuck. I couldn't do even my everyday stuff with a Mac..

If you intend to game on the movie, don't go for a Mac because they require either 1) specifically bought Mac compatible games (which aren't massively available) or 2) the knowledge of how to aquire and install an emulator such as virtual desktop. On a laptop you don't really want to be wasting time, space and memory on sorting out an emulator unless you have good knowledge of it already. If you want to game, go for Alienware. If not, go for Mac - OSX is a stable system whereas Vista is new and you'd be looking at seeing a lot of security updates. Yes, you do get virus' for Mac but they're much harder to come across. Pretty much all the "incredible new features" that Vista users boast have already been on OSX for a number of years.

Most programmes you'd buy from a shop. BUT - a lot of officey programmes (eg Photoshop) will sell Mac counterparts, it's just games where you'd be having problems, as I mentioned you can get a windows emulator. As for things such as Microsoft Office, yes you can get it for Mac but why waste the time/money when you can also come across open source programmes that are free to download and mostly come in whichever system you're using. Or download it illegally.

I have 3 Dell desktops at my house. So I don't really want another desktop.

Thanks, that's really helpful information.

That's just wrong. First off, Vista is horrible. Just horrible.
Second, Macs are sinking? That's why Vista is just a cheap attempt at making it seem Mac-like. Not to mention the new OS coming out for Macs in like....a month? It's going to blow away Vista, and it's coming equipped with Parallels so you can run with Windows if you want to play your games or whatever.

And lastly, you prefer Dells? The customer service between Dell and Apple isn't even comparable.
