Marmite?

Can someone kind enough please tell me what Marmite is..and what the difference between it and Vegemite is?

Pretty please...

right-track 02-23-2007 01:28 PM

Marmite is yeast extract.
I think Vegemite is the Aussie version.

Edit: Marmite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I was virtually brought up on Marmite butty's.

NaNaNer 02-23-2007 01:29 PM

What does it taste like..and how would you eat it?

[MERIT] 02-23-2007 01:30 PM

Is it anything like thermite?

On a slice of bread and it tastes bitter. It's a strong taste.

NaNaNer 02-23-2007 01:34 PM

Well heres the deal..I was just offered some from a friend..long story and I didnt know if I should take it and risk suffering from "curiousity killed the cat" or tell them no thanks...

right-track 02-23-2007 01:36 PM

Eat it. You haven't lived until you tried Marmite.
You'll either like it or absolutely hate it.
It's a taste thet grows on you though so at least give it a go.
It's also very good for you.

NaNaNer 02-23-2007 01:53 PM

I took it..and it looks like a Guiness bottle...

Sparky 02-23-2007 02:53 PM

dont try it. When i went to england they all tricked me into thinking it was going to taste good! its gross, sour and bitter.

right-track 02-23-2007 02:55 PM

Mardyarse ^

Sparky 02-23-2007 03:20 PM

i dont know what that means...is this some british slang?

Merkaba 02-23-2007 03:57 PM

Marmite is a fantastic spread, I definitely like Vegemite better ( because it packs less punch) but both spreads have some awesome properties.

Fact: Due to all it's B12, Marmite is excellent for curbing a hangover.

You f*cking traitor! lol

DontRunMeOver 02-26-2007 03:51 AM

Having experienced both I think they both taste equally fantastic. Vegemite is easier to spread - room temperature marmite has a hardness similar to refridgerated butter - while marmite is visually a bit more appealing (vegemite is a nasty brown colour).

NaNaNer 02-26-2007 07:21 AM

I ate it..on some toast..a slight smear...it was okay..I think you might have to have a aquired taste for it..or have it grow on you...

[MERIT] 02-26-2007 08:12 AM

Applebutter FTW

NaNaNer 02-26-2007 08:17 AM

Apple Butter is yummy...so is Smuckers Grape Jelly as well as All Fruits Strawberry Preserves...

We have a dish called Meunedo...it has tripe in it..isnt trip the lining of a cows stomach? Yes...I do believe so...

Its not a bad meal..but no one can tell you what it is before you try it..

Kinda like tongue.

right-track 02-26-2007 01:07 PM

Cows have 4 stomachs. 3 of the four are used for tripe.

NaNaNer 02-26-2007 01:13 PM

Meunedo is more of a soup then a "dish" its served in bowls like Posole and it is made with Hamoniny...

How can it be served with Onions..the tripe that is..

Not exactly how it's cooked here, but near enough.

600ml (1 pint) Milk
450g (1lb) Dressed Tripe, washed*
25g (1oz) Butter
3 Medium Onions, sliced
3 tbsp Plain Flour
1 Bay Leaf
Pinch Grated Nutmeg
Fresh Parsley

Place the tripe in a saucepan and cover with cold water.
Bring to the boil.
Remove from the heat, drain.
Rinse under cold running water.
Cut into 2.5cm (1 inch) pieces.
Place the tripe, milk, onions, bay leaf and nutmeg into a saucepan.
Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 2 hours or until tender.
Remove from the heat, strain and reserve the liquid.
Keep the tripe and onions warm.
Melt the butter in the saucepan, stir in the flour and cook gently for 2 minute, stirring constantly.
Make the liquid up to 600ml (1 pint) with milk or cream, gradually add to the saucepan, stirring constantly.
Bring to the boil and simmer until the sauce thickens.
Garnish with parsley.
Serve with potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

*If you don't wash the tripe first, then you run the risk of eating some of the cows stomach contents too. :)

Shit looks like I'll have to make a run for the bathtub.

Honestly, even the smell of tripe is an invasion of my personal space.

Vegemite is number 1!

655321 02-27-2007 12:04 PM

NaNaNer 02-27-2007 12:12 PM

NaNaNer 02-27-2007 12:15 PM

The Nutmeg Trip

Ma Cherie 02-27-2007 02:46 PM
