WinMX died a while back if I remember correctly, and wasn't that great anyway.

Soulseek is great, but I have the same problems sometimes.

Where can I get this patch you talk about?

Default Correction, SP2 should burn in hell!!!

Quote:
My transfers stays in "Initializing" or Soulseek works okay during the first minutes and then seems to freeze.

You have probably installed the Windows XP Service Pack 2 or your computer came bundled with this service pack.

Service Pack 2 contains a number of bug fixes and new features.

One of those new "feature" is a capping on the number of concurrent half-open TCP connections. Windows XP SP2 is severely the number of ongoing connections you can make to the Internet in a given laps of time (maximum 10 half-open TCP connections). SoulSeek, like any P2P software, rely heavily on ongoing connections to connect to the SoulSeek Distributed Network and to initiate File transfers. The software will seems to "hang" while it's actually Windows XP delaying the connection.

You can check for this by looking into your Event Viewer in the Administrative Tools of your Windows XP Control Panel.

The bad news is that this capping setting CANNOT be changed. Microsoft just didn't provide any registry entries not configuration file to do this.

To restore pre-SP2 behavior (= no limit), you must patch a system file. PLEASE only go further with this procedure if you feel confident you can succeed AND if you have backups of your worthy files in case your Windows XP doesn't want to boot anymore. We cannot be held responsible if anything goes wrong, you have been warned. At your own risks.

Visit this website, read everything carefully and then proceed. You need to restart your computer after the procedure.

Problem fixed with the patch found on the soulseek site, no more "initializing" to infinity, and all is well with the world again.

What exactly is your problem with Soulseek? Have you even read what that patch is for (seeing as how you clearly haven't read how it's used)?

I havent used it in a while now though. Would my zonealarm firewall mess with it at all?

and, yes im pretty computer illiterate. So how exactly is the patched use, i clicked on the one that had exe at the end, and it was running for a bit and then aborted

Don't install it, this patch is for something else.
