And then I realized... like I was shot... like I was shot with a diamond... a diamond bullet right through my forehead. And I thought: My God... the genius of that.

They are idiotic bastar*s who were obviously born yesterday because they have nothing better to do than insult random people in the street. 'Goff! change your style!' etc. Wtf! Why are they so retarded?

One question, will they EVER grow out of it?

Chavs, Skallies or whatever you want to call them are just ordinary people on the whole.

They are known to wear hooded tops, Nike trainers, Tracksuits, with more Jewellery than actually necersarry and are forever being tarnished with a brush of accusation. Often the accusations are unfounded and they are stereotyped because of their appearance.

They will out grow the chavism styles like all people generally do as I've yet to see an elderly goth or Emo.

Mikey, the main link between chavs is their dress (as Dezzy said). It mostly involves wearing 'casual clothes' produced by footballing brands in various shades of blue with some white thrown in. Chavs generally don't shop in high street fashion stores for their clothes, they buy clothes from sports stores (JJB sports, for example) or buy budget versions of the same from thrift shops. I think they get most of their jewellery from Argos or market stalls, instead of going to actual jeweller shops, although I may be wrong about this.

Unlike many social groups, chavs aren't a self-defining one. You're a chav not by calling yourself one, but by being described as one by other people. Therefore, your personal appearance is the main factor in this description, also the way you walk (people who get called chavs tend to have a more bouncy but awkward way of walking, which involves them swinging their arms about in unbalanced way), the way you talk (chavs tend to shout at each other in the street, particularly chav girls) and the places you hang around (pubs with crappy decor but cheap drinks and football on the TV).

In America, the phrase chav would probably be most akin to 'Trailer Trash', although Chav probably doesn't have as many negative connotations about the persons background, lifestyle or general effectiveness as a human being... its more of a comment on their dress code and demeanour.

Chavvy adults are generally fine, apart from when chavvy mums start yelling at their kids in the supermarket, but chav teenagers can be pretty annoying. I disagree with Dezzy that chavs grow out of it, because chav isn't a subculture in the same way that Goth certainly is and that Emo is to an extent. Chavs don't always grow out of their chaviness, they just grow up and become a less annoying version of chav.

From your descriptions I think we have them here in select parts of the country. We call them Italians. Though its a very select form of italian.

We generally refer to them as Gumba's or guido's (sp?) and they are commonly found on the streets of New York and New Jersey and less so in other areas of the Northeast Region of the U.S. (which is only because its the only part of the country where European decent matters). As one New York mobster said "The track suits? Oh yeah thats cause the bands go down real easy so you can get blow jobs quick in a bunch of diffrent places."

While i'm sure their not the exact same thing, their close. If I'm correct, the american version of the Chav talks baseball rather than football (soccer), speaks with a "fuh-ged-a-bow-dit" accent and generally likes gawdy fashion. The females have teased up hair, fake acryllic brightly colored press-on nails, constantly chew gum with their mouths open and laugh in a manner most closely akin to the bleating of goats. The female however is not specific to women of Italian decent, somehow the Jews of the same area are coming into the same culture. Although the men much slower than the women.

If you've ever seen any movie shot at the Jersey Shore or Brooklyn, thats an accurate depiction. I'm assuming a Chiv is sort of like Ali G?

No, not really, but yes I can see the association between Italians in the US and chavs. Chav girls tend to have hair pulled back very tight in ponytails and probably their number one fashion accesory is a pram!

Having cheked out a wikipedia thing about Chavs, it gave a few north american terms which are meant to be similar. A lot of them aren't really similar, but "Hoodsie" (for chav girls) and "white trash", could be seen as similar.

EDIT: Apparently "Guidos" is another good term.

Uh, Pushchair? For a baby? Is that the US word?

Well, actually I think pram = baby-buggy and pushchair = pushchair. They push around baby moving devices, that's the main point.

EDIT: Yep, its called a baby buggy over your side.
