Well, I may as well stick my two cents worth in here, since this thread has gotten around to this particular topic.
I am often mistaken for a Buddhist, which is ok. The Dalai Lama is one of the people I admire most, because of his ability to see things simply for what they are. If there was one person on this earth I could sit and speak with for an hour, it would be him. Buddhism isn't really about worshipping. It's about listening to yourself. Your spirit is the most important tool in Buddhism. They don't say "Stand at this altar and worship". They say "Sit quietly, alone, and listen to yourself. Find your path." I am not Buddhist, though. However, I do practice and believe in a lot of their ways. Meditation is something I recommend to anyone who feels upset on the inside. Just close the door, and sit quietly. Be aware of your thoughts, and consciously remove them. Visualized them getting pushed away, smaller and smaller, until they are gone. Then just breathe. Focus on a sound. A hum, a tone, whatever. Breathe. It takes practice. Sometimes, I get really deep, sometimes, not. But I always come out of my meditation feeling calmer, if for no other reason, because I sat still and settled my spirit. I spent a lot of years, drifting from religion to religion, trying to 'find' peace, when all along, I was carrying it inside me. It was a defining moment in my life, when I realized I didn't need anyone but myself to live quietly, peacefully, and content. However, I also believe in, and practice, Native American customs and rituals. They believe all things are sacred, not just a 'God'. Of course, they worship a Great Spirit, but they also believe in the sacred value of animals, trees, the sky, the sun, everything. It's all relevant to them. They believe we (humans) are as much a part of the landscape as the rock they're standing on. They don't think they're any better than any living thing. I also have my medicine, a small pouch I wear, with a few private things inside that mean nothing to anyone but me. They represent strength, wisdom, and dignity. Like I said, I spent a lot of years looking outward for peace. It's not anywhere 'outward'. It's inward. Organized religion in, too me, based on fear, not faith. "Live like this, or you won't get to heaven". Scary thought, eh? My belief is, if you are compassionate towards other lives, (meaning not only humans, but animals, plants, etc), and treat them with respect, your life will be a good one. You will sleep well, knowing you were a good human being today. I'm not knocking anyone's religious beliefs. If what you believe gives you peace, then it is no one's business but your own. My belief system is an odd melding of Buddhism and Native American custom. It's not recognized by any church, but it is what I believe, completely believe, to be true. That's all the further it needs to go.
