I can see the immigration thing to a point.But there are nations younger than America with strong identities like Italy or Germany who were countries made of of loads of different smaller states each with their own identity.
Yet most of those people regard themselves as German or Italian first even though it`s basically a blanket term.

Even if they were made up of smaller states, those nations always had a sense of nationalism, since they did share many of the same customs and had lived together for years. America doesn't even have that.

But they wern`t nations until about 150 or so years ago.

I worked with a guy from Naples. If I said to him what do you consider yourself he`d say Italian not Neopolitan

Maybe they realise that most people wouldn't understand what they meant if they refered to German or Italian states (although I've heard a fair number of people call themselves Bavarian or Sicilian/Sardinian). You yourself said 'Indian', but that's referring to a huge country made of lots of different states, with different languages and different ethnic identities. Which state exactly was that part of your family from?
