Well in the middle-ages if you were a knight you were in charge of fighting with heavy cavalry, shining armour and all that. Nowadays its a title of honour, given to people for the contribution to soceity or something. You're called 'Sir' and thats about it, i think.

I think you have to be a British citizen to get knighted. All that happens is the queen and her advisors (which includes a load of MPs and focus groups etc. now) decide who they want to knight and then go ahead and do it. You don't get many benefits, other than 'Sir' looks good on a CV and you get invited to things like royal coronations, weddings and funerals. If you're made a Lord it's better, because then you get to go to the house of lords whenever you want and turn down bills from the house of commons and piss of all of the MPs.

I think he wants to get knighted and wants to know how you go about doing it. He heard that you might have to slay a dragon to be knighted, but as Elton John isn't known for his aptitude with weaponry, Dirt thought maybe Elton John gave it so many BJs that the dragon died from over-sexing...

...I thought the House of Lords only had ceremonial purposes and couldn't veto. My History teacher lied to me.

Any non british citizen gets an honary knighthood , which is basiacally the same thing but you can`t call yourself Sir.

Bob Geldof has one of those

The House of Lords can, by popular vote, turn down any bill (infact if I recall correctly they turned down the relatively recent fox hunting bill). However, whatever party is in power are the guys that decide who to nominate for the House of Lords, and generally this honour goes to their ex-MPs and big donaters. Which doesn't leave the HoL as being particularly unbiased. Usually, the Lords are there for more a rewording purpose as they are there to make sure the phrasing of a bill is as good as it can be (snerk, they fail).

The Commons also maintains the ability to push legislation over the HoL if they get a good enough vote (again something I think was evidenced by the Fox hunting legislation).

www.parliament.uk should have it put more clearly (though I'm too lazy to check).

Yes, your history teacher lied to you.
