i just downloaded some rise against but it's a 'rar' file so windows media player and itunes aren't playing it, any idea how the hell i play the damn file...

Get WinRAR and un-RAR it.

go to www.download.com and search winRAR

Once you have winRAR installed, double click that file and when it asks you where you want to extract it to, just select the folder where you put all your music.
