That's exactly it! He did it without the research, he just acted on their natural hate for...just about everybody, and convinced them that they were better than everybody. What better way to brainwash an entire army to your personal ideals. Osama just got smart enough to use the zealous behavior of their religion to act on his personal vendetta.
