The battle of the Boyne (which I believe is taken as the point at which England took pretty much full control of Ireland) was in 1690. If not, then it was probably some earlier point. Since then, the Northern Ireland area has been part of Britain, 'opting out' of joining the Irish Free State (the republic) in 1920 when given the choice. The people who were part of united Ireland over 300 years ago are now long dead, whereas a majority of the current population of Northern Ireland are happy to live as part of Britain. That's what they grew up with and it seems pointless to change it just because somebody wants to make the maps look prettier.

Those who want to live as part of the republic of Ireland could always move there.
well this is what i don't understand. if the majority of the northern irish population is irish, just of another faith, where exactly is the problem in living in the republic of ireland? and why would the northern irish people rather opt out to live in the same country of their opressors rather than with their own country men. wouldn't it be fair to assume that those people chose to live in that country in 1920 because they're collaborationists and they feared retaliation?

What you have to understand about Northern Ireland is the fact that the majority there wish to remain British and vote democratically to be so.

The violence of the past 30 years was caused mainly by a minority of Republicans (catholics) and a minority of Loyalists (Protestants).
The majority of both catholic/protestant people of Northern Ireland, wished for nothing but peace. Finally with a shared Government, that wish can now be a reality. Lets hope so.

Being Croatian, with the problems your nation has had, you will understand that the situation in Northern Ireland (in the past) is a sore point for both British and Irish.
i'll never understand why those people hate each other so much, but i put my money on the fact that the catholics' hate stems from centuries of opression that just continued after the end of the imperialist era.

The problems in Northern Ireland were/are complex and date back a long way...arguably back to the English Civil war and Cromwell in Ireland.
The recent more modern problems began (I'm not an authority on this) during the late 60's with the Catholic Civil Rights marches. The protestant population, fearing a catholic uprising and a Civil War, began to take things into their own hands. Many people were killed on each side, the Catholics bearing the brunt.
The British Army were called in (and people forget this) to protect the Catholic minority in the province.
The emergence of the I.R.A. among other Republican (catholic) organisations continued the fight for a united Ireland.
Loyalist (protestant) sectarian organisations were also formed, U.V.F & U.D.A. to name two.
A series of bombings and murders on both sides, with the British Army in the middle. Naturally the I.R.A. didn't want British soldiers in Northern Ireland and began to target them.
The I.R.A. then took their 'struggle' to the British mainland in the shape of bombing both military and civilian targets.

The hatred has been handed down through generations to present day.
Despite the ceasefire both Loyalist and Republican sectarian groups continue with the violence, but to my understanding, mostly in a gangster style way.
i.e; Drugs, territory etc. Cos there's money in it.
One of the biggest problems today are the punishment beatings meted out to druggies/ joy riders etc in the form of severe beatings to knee capping (shooting a person in the legs, with an Ambulance pre ordered, so the victim doesn't bleed to death). The consequences of kneecappings are random, ranging from flesh wounds and broken legs to amputations.

So after 30 odd years of stalemate, neither side willing to budge, it looks as though Northern Ireland is heading towards a peaceful settlement that the law abiding peaceful citizens are only to pleased to welcome.

Any more salt for the wounds Marijan?

The Reformation of the Church to Protestantarianism.
Protesting against the Roman Catholic Church and converting to the Protestant faith...in Northern Ireland the non converters are a minority.

see the thing is that they came here, just like the brits came in northern ireland so they have no right to clame this land for themselves. and neither do the protestants....

The people of Ulster voted* not to join Eire (The Republic of Ireland), but to remain loyal to the crown and stay British.

*read this very slowly as if talking to an old person with bad hearing*

*a Democratic pass-time popular in the free West.
