The problems in Northern Ireland were/are complex and date back a long way...arguably back to the English Civil war and Cromwell in Ireland.
The recent more modern problems began (I'm not an authority on this) during the late 60's with the Catholic Civil Rights marches. The protestant population, fearing a catholic uprising and a Civil War, began to take things into their own hands. Many people were killed on each side, the Catholics bearing the brunt. The British Army were called in (and people forget this) to protect the Catholic minority in the province. The emergence of the I.R.A. among other Republican (catholic) organisations continued the fight for a united Ireland. Loyalist (protestant) sectarian organisations were also formed, U.V.F & U.D.A. to name two. A series of bombings and murders on both sides, with the British Army in the middle. Naturally the I.R.A. didn't want British soldiers in Northern Ireland and began to target them. The I.R.A. then took their 'struggle' to the British mainland in the shape of bombing both military and civilian targets. The hatred has been handed down through generations to present day. Despite the ceasefire both Loyalist and Republican sectarian groups continue with the violence, but to my understanding, mostly in a gangster style way. i.e; Drugs, territory etc. Cos there's money in it. One of the biggest problems today are the punishment beatings meted out to druggies/ joy riders etc in the form of severe beatings to knee capping (shooting a person in the legs, with an Ambulance pre ordered, so the victim doesn't bleed to death). The consequences of kneecappings are random, ranging from flesh wounds and broken legs to amputations. So after 30 odd years of stalemate, neither side willing to budge, it looks as though Northern Ireland is heading towards a peaceful settlement that the law abiding peaceful citizens are only to pleased to welcome. Any more salt for the wounds Marijan? |
