Third one (maybe not very controversial, if this is becoming some weird philosophy thread then sorry) - if you think about it mathematically, chances are you're less reasonable, less friendly, less interesting, less open-minded, more annoying, more racist, more bigoted, ruder, cruder and smellier than half of the people you see in the street every day.

On a similar note, for every time somebody offends or upsets you or you genuinely think somebody is an *******, there's probably been an equal number of times when the reverse has been true.

Default The Controversy Of Music Downloading

Quoted from Hartford.edu

A famous artist once said, “Music brings the people together.” There is no truer statement when it comes to music. Music has been around since somewhere around the beginning of the human race. Music has this amazing power to inspire emotion into everyone that listens to it. There is a song for every emotion. There are songs that will make a person angry and there are those that will make a person cry. There are even songs that will make people fall in love. Music is something we use as an extension of ourselves. It allows a person to express there deepest feelings. Music is important part of every culture in the world no matter how big or small. In more recent times music has greatly evolved. It has moved beyond simple media to the computer world. One of the most popular formats for listening to music has become the computer. Nowadays people are able to download their favorite songs online. This however has not gone over well with the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and has brought up a very controversial debate that has been going on for several years now.

The concept of getting music for free is not new to the world. The only thing that has changed has been the way people have gone about doing it. First people used the method of cassette tapes and then came compact discs. Now people download various music file types, such as mp3s or aacs, to there computer. Portable devices called mp3 players have even been made that will store downloaded mp3 files and play them as if it was a compact disc player or a tape player. Copying music has always been illegal as it violates copyright laws. However downloading music has been controversial because it is newer. Recently however artists have begun to complain that downloading music has greatly decreased the sales of their albums and therefore cutting into their profits. Because of this the RIAA was formed. According to their website the RIAA claims,

"Its mission is to foster a business and legal climate that supports and promotes our members' creative and financial vitality. Its members are the record companies that comprise the most vibrant national music industry in the world….In support of this mission, the RIAA works to protect intellectual property rights worldwide and the First Amendment rights of artists; conduct consumer industry and technical research; and monitor and review - - state and federal laws, regulations and policies (RIAA, par. 1-2)."

According to the music industry the downloading of music is one of the greatest crimes one can commit against them. They claim that by downloading music the artists do not receive the recognition they have earned and deserve.

As said earlier this has become a much debated issue in recent years. One of the main reasons for the controversy is because it seems that no one is safe from the music industry in its war against music downloading. The majority of the people who download music are minors and young adults. The music industry does not discriminate and will sue anybody who downloads copyright music. FoxNews.com reports, “The music industry has turned its big legal guns on Internet music-swappers — including a 12-year-old New York City girl who thought downloading songs was fun (FoxNews.com, par. 1).” This twelve-year-old girl is not alone. She is one upon hundreds who have been sued for downloading music illegally. This has not been going over well with the public. They feel it is wrong for the RIAA to be pressing charges against minors. These lawsuits are very expensive. The average usually totals around three-thousand dollars for each individual song. People feel it is immoral and greedy for minors to be charged such high amounts of money by the music industry. Most people believe that downloading music is no big deal. However, the music industry does not want this issue to be taken lightly. The RIAA will not stand for any music to be downloaded for free.

The most popular music downloading website is itunes.com This website not only offers songs for low fees they also have a special feature designed for college students. Itunes allows users to copy there already purchased compact discs to their Itunes browsers. Once copied the students are allowed to share music with others on their campus due to the fact that most campuses have local area networks. The music cannot be downloaded from the network only uploaded. This encourages students to purchase more compact discs so that they can increase the variety of music on their networks. It is also a program capable of interacting with the most popular mp3 player today the IPod.

Music downloading is a very sensitive subject. Musicians do not feel they are receiving the compensation they deserve for their work. The Recording Industry Association of America’s job is to see that illegal music downloading is stopped. It is an organization that is not afraid to do what it feels is necessary for the success of its platform, even if it means pressing charges against minors as young as twelve years of age. The music industry does not want the public to think this a money issue. They want everyone to understand that illegally downloading music is a violation of the first amendment and violates copyright laws. It is a fancy way of getting bootleg compact discs. It is a crime and it will not be tolerated anymore.
