Would it make sense if and when I actually buy a record player? By speaker wire do you mean the red and black wire out the back?

I've started looking at some record players and I somewhat understand now all I need is money. Another question though, you know how some records are 7" or 12" or w/e, can basic record players pretty much play everything or no?

I looked at some Crosleys, they look good, but do they have ports for plugging in cables to bigger speakers? The built-in speakers look pretty small, I'd rather use the big ones I have hooked up to my CD player.

It's not just volume, it's sound quality, and my speakers are currently set up in a surround-sound fashion. Not that I'd be getting stereo sound out of records, but it's still way better sounding to have it coming at you from all directions.

For sure. It definitely adds another dimension to listening. It's kind of like when you wear headphones for some music, the sound will fade in from left to right and add quite a cool feel to the music. With ordinary speakers set up in one place you don't get the fades or crossfades because it's all coming from the one direction. Half the artists you love you wouldn't even realise have done that with their music if you didn't listen to them through headphones or surround sound.

I want someone to buy me a surround sound system. The closest I've gotten to surround sound is my Sony headphones

I have many of each, It really depends on the music, the cost and availability. I'm not going to bid 1,000 dollars for a record but If I find something cheap on trademe or at the record store I'll buy it.
