What would you call someone that was african american and fitted chav material?

people asked me if i was a chav when i joined this site....because of the adidas obsession....i had no clue what that was either....thankfully, we don't have them in croatia....nor emo kids....

They'd still be a chav, everybody who says they'd be something else would be wrong! There are loads of black chavs and asian chavs around Birmingham too. Its not individual ethnicity that's the issue, its more to do with where you were brought up and who you were surrounded by. If you're black or indian and grew up in a chavvy area then you may well become a chav. If you grew up somewhere else then you probably won't. Gangsta, however, isn't the same because:

a) Chavs don't necessarily have anything to do with gangs
b) The clothing they wear, although it fits under 'sportswear' isn't the same type. Gangsta clothing uses a lot of basketball clothes, chav clothing generally doesn't. Chav clothing uses some football clothes but mostly its non-sport clothing made by a sports brand (and bought from JJB or somehwhere like that) - by non-sport I mean you wouldn't want to use it for competitive sport because its not designed for performance.

So 'ganstas' don't generally fit 'chav material'.

To really be a chav, as far as I know, you do have to be British, or at least live in Britain or be from Britain. Why? Because that's where the chavs are, so its the only way to pick up true chav culture!

are you sure about the ethnicity issue? somehow it seems to me that chavs are considered scum because they picked up certain behaviour from other ethnicities ( for example, it's quite common for black people in america to have a child at a young age isn't it? nothing abnormal about it, but when white people do it, they're white trash...as i figure *has no idea what he's talking about* )...also, as far as clothing is concerned, i figure there's nothing unusual for other ethinicites to wear sportsware and dress up like afro-americans, but when white people do it it's just wrong, and even though it's not the same as with afro-americans, it's pretty similar from the photos i saw of chavs ( baseball hats, golden chains arround necks, oversized sport jerseys etc. )...i dunno...

Those are some really interesting points there, although it doesn't change the classifications which these people fall into (its more of an art than a science, recognising chavs and non-chavs). It is true that black and asian people can be chavs (although the majority of chavs are white) and I think the idea that people are 'dressing up like afro-americans' - that makes it sound like a fancy dress party! - is debatable, as you could probably use the same argument to say that a black person who wears jeans is 'dressing up like a white guy'.

It seems strange to me that poor white people, in an affluent country, would be labelled with the 'trash' moniker so regularly, when poor black or asian people in the same situation wouldn't. It may be because the word 'trash' is an offensive way to describe a person, so poor white people, still being part of a white majority (in ethnic terms) are seen to be in a better position to take the insult, whereas using it to describe poor black people or asians, who are both poor AND an ethnic minority would be too obviously callous.

And, well, it seems a lot of people do just love hurling insults at people they don't know!

i dont think its as much the underage pregnancies that is so much an annoyance its the fact that a steryotypical chav mother will have a good few kids at a young age and live in a council flat off child benefits and other free benefits. moochers.

Yes, that was a good point. Its not having children early on that is the bad thing, its having lots of kids (at whatever age) when you know you don't have the money to support them and will need to take lots of handouts, in spite of the fact that everybody has been given loads of advice on contraception when they were at school and condoms are available for free from your GP, GU clinic, hospitals and loads of other places. In Britain there is a lot of financial aid available, so mooching (living off benefits) is much more lucrative than it would be in most other countries.
