Shocking Pictures

I was watching a documentary on Channel 4 last night called 'Falling Man' about a man who jumped from the Twin Towers. It was shocking for so many reasons, but for some reason you couldn't put your finger on it why it was so shocking. I was just wondering whether anyone has got any shocking pictures they would like to share? They don't have to be gore filled or anything to be shocking, just those kind of pictures that really take your breath away. Like the picture of the guy standing on top of the World Trade having his photo taken, and you can see the plane coming towards the building. Post pictures if you have them, please.

This photograph taken by Jeff Widener of the 'tank man' stopping a column of tanks on its way to Tiananmen Square, never fails to amaze me.
Even when the tanks tried to go around him he still wouldn't let them pass.

God how brave is that guy stopping the tanks? And really was there any need to show us the John and Yoko pic? I'm just about to have my dinner.... I hope it's not sausages....

TrampInaTux 03-17-2006 02:20 PM

I heard that the girls clothes had been burnt off or something. Is that true?

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-17-2006 02:25 PM

It`s possible , I remember watching a documentary about it a while back & they said that the whole of her back was covered in burns

bungalow 03-17-2006 02:31 PM

How about the one of the monk who burned himself to death to protest the Vietnam War

I wish I could find a picture of this somewhere but in Japan where the Atomic bomb was dropped there is a shadow of a man that has been burnt into the concrete that still remains there today. Can you believe that? A shadow actually burnt into the concrete? If anyone can get a picture of that I would love to see it.

I've just realised Bungalowbills picture, on the first page, is the same guy on the cover of Rage Against the Machines Self Titled cd.

*Could be little slow on this realisation*

Im not science major by any stretch of the mark, but could someone explain to me how a shadow would get burned into anything. I can't figure out how an absence of light do to an eclipsing figure would have anything to do with cellular mitosis.

Furthermore, how can you possibly burn the absence of something into anything tangible.

I would have imagined that the force of the blast would have forced the burning flesh so hard into the surrounding area that it stayed there.

Merkaba 03-18-2006 12:34 AM

In that it's not the shadow then is it?

It's the actual person.

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-18-2006 12:35 AM

yep

TrampInaTux 03-18-2006 02:23 AM

I heard by both Science and History teachers that it is the shadow of the person. Although the actual picture is a lot less shocking than I would have hoped-it just looks like a blob, I was expecting it to actually look like a person.

This photo captures the split second before the bullet enters his head.
I've seen the film footage of this on a documentary about Vietnam and it's horrific. The man executed was a Viet Con officer and said to be responsible for the deaths of 8 South Vietnamese. I think the photo is more powerful than the news reel.

This is the picture of the Falling man I told you about. I think it's the way he is falling that shocks you. It's graceful, almost as if he has accepted what will happen to him.

What was it a relative said...something like, he knew that God would catch him. If he was truly calm and accepting, then it makes a mockery of the so called faith of the sucide pilots.

I have seen other photos of different stages of his fall. Unlike the other 'jumpers' I have saw, he seems to just let himself go. The others try and control the situation, trying to keep themselves upright. He just lets himself go, knowing that he isn't in control anymore. That is what fascinates me. He knows what will happen to him and he accepts it. That is the sort of bravery that is in a real human being, not some brainwashed suicide bummer.

yeah I really have to admire that guy. it takes real bravery to not only acknowledge that there is a lot in this world that we have no control over, but accept it too. and I dont think anyone in their right mind would consider those suicide bombers brave.

dog 03-18-2006 03:51 AM

ugh. brave? graceful falling? shut up.

Ignore him he's a panhead. If we are really lucky this person may even contribute to the thread in a positive way.

Somehow I doubt it...

I would like to see you deal with being stuck on one of the top floors in an extremely tall burning building and still maintain your dignity. ANYONE who was in the World TRade Centre at that time was brave. And to be honest I think you are a very sad individual for saying otherwise.

theyre brave because they had a plane flown into a building they were in? thats not brave, thats just bad luck.

and to jibber, i wasn't offended, i was just disagreeing.

someone jumping off a building isn't brave. call me sad. call me an ass. i don't care. im not trying to convince anyone.

i hate how patriotic people in the u.s have gotten have 9/11. patriotism is stupid. you could've been born anywhere, your mum just happened to pop you out where ever you live.

insult away.

Would you have stayed there while the whole thing collapsed around your arse?

I know I woudn't have.

And it's really got nothing to do with being patriotic.I'm not American, but I can see as a needless waste of life...........much like you, yourself are.

MURDER JUNKIE 03-18-2006 04:35 AM
