What event will you be watching? Hockey, Speed Skating, and Super G. WORD!

Luge forever.

Don't mess with the luge.

jibber 02-10-2006 05:47 PM

ski jumping definitely! I know half of the canadian team. Other than that, hockey for sure (I'm calling gold for canada yet again) snowboarding pipe, and ski racing and freestyle.

adidasss 02-10-2006 05:54 PM

alpine skiing......JANICA KOSTELIC.....RECOGNIZE!!

Hockey & Shaun White.

What could be better?

IamAlejo 02-10-2006 08:15 PM

Shaun White. That's about it.

Olympics don't really do it for me anymore. I used to love em

sleepy jack 02-10-2006 08:18 PM

X-Games for me, the olympics bore me.
No skateboarding.

adidasss 02-10-2006 08:35 PM

who's shaun white?

MURDER JUNKIE 02-10-2006 10:05 PM

Unless they make auto racing an olympic sport I couldn't give two shakes of a rat's hairy ass about the olympics

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-11-2006 12:13 AM

I`ll be looking forward to watching the skeleton bobsleigh.

You`d have to be a few sandwiches short of a picnic to go down at 90mph on a tea tray.

One guy I know was a gold metal contender for the olympic 2 man luge. They were in Japan for a competition, and his partner showed up for the finals hungover. his partner got mad, and quit, so he had to drop off the team. His parter completely screwed him over.

shandapanda 02-11-2006 05:07 AM

this snowboarder was on david letterman...he embraced the fact that he would NOT be a houshold name..EVER
and i was in the gaming store and we tried playing the game they made for the winter olympics..i can see that it is not gonna be a hit! that game sucks!!

dog 02-11-2006 06:37 AM

sports?... yawn.

IamAlejo 02-11-2006 07:10 PM

Shaun White is like 18 or 19 years old, and has been a worldclass snowboarder and skateboarder since he was 15.

He's pretty incredible.

Merkaba 02-12-2006 12:10 AM

NZ is going to win everything they enter. And then they'll wake up from a good night sleep.

We have a 16 year old girl going over for half pipe snowboarding. Thats pretty impressive in itself. No chance of showing up the Canadians or the Russians I would think though.

Imonlydancing 02-12-2006 06:17 AM

I watched the skiing yesterday, the women. I got really into it. hahhh.

jibber 02-12-2006 11:19 AM

Yeah Jessica Heil!! Gold medal for canada in womens freestyle skiing!! her jumps weren't that impressive, but her tecnique and speed in the bumps were rediculous. She won with a 360 (penciled out, no style) and a nice backflip. Kari Traa fron norway got second, she had WAY better jumps, a pretty nice corked 3 (although no grab or anything) and a REALLY nice backflip, but she was slower coming down and her skiing wasn't as controlled as Heil's. yeah canada! The canadoan womens hockey slaughtered the russian's today, 12 - 0 for us. Last night the women beat italy 16 - 0. The canadian women are killing it in the olympics! Oh, and shaun white won gold in pipe. big surprise.

adidasss 02-12-2006 12:02 PM

^^i can't see any of that....:( they're only showing apline skiing here...

jibber 02-12-2006 12:07 PM

you mean they're only showing ski racing and that's it? They should be showinf freestyle, it's mogul skiing with two jumps, and most of the time they do sh*tty unstylish jumps too. One girl did a REALLY nice 3 with a mute grab. Super smooth, nice sttyle in the air, but the judges arent looking for that at all. They should really just take the jumps out of the mogul competition and have a slopestyle or pipe event, because the majority of the freestyle skiers are rediculously good in the moguls (for which I give them HUGE amounts of respect), but as for jumps, they suck.

and now in english please? slopestyle, mogul, mute grab? wtf are you on about girl?

jibber 02-12-2006 01:27 PM

moguls are the bumps created in snow with small spaces to navigate in between. here's a picture of a compeition freestyle course. Skiers have to race down the mogul field, and go off a jump (and do a trick), they land and then imediately enter the moguls again, which will lead to another jump, where the vast majority of skiers will do a trick of greater difficulty than the first jump. Then they ski down the rest of the mogul field. They are scored on speed, and tecnique in the moguls and on their jumps. here's a picture of a competition freestyle course. Notice the bumps in the course, those are moguls. On a regular ski hill run they'd be spaced much more sporatically, and they'd vary in size.

a slopestyle course is a competition course consisting of terrain park features. There are major slopestyle comps for both skiing and snowboarding, but so far neither are an olympic event (only half pipe for snowboarding).

A mute grab (for skiers anyways) is when you reach down and grab your ski in front of the toe piece of your bindings, but not the tip, that's a different grab. If you spin left, you'd grab your left ski with your right hand. If you spin right grab your right ski with your left hand.

Now, there's also reverse/leading/opposite mute grabs. They differ from a regular mute grab in that if you were spinning left you would grab your right ski with your left hand, so so the grab is done with the leading hand in the rotation, the opposite or reverse of a regular mute.

also, if you grab further up the front of the ski, it's called a critical. If you grab the actual tip of the ski, then it's a nose grab.

jibber 02-12-2006 02:48 PM

another medal for canada! Cindy Klassen took bronze in the 3000m speed skating event today.

And, Bode Miller finished 5th in the men's downhill. After all his talk, bragging about being the best, going on and on and seeking the spotlight in every opportunity he got, he finished 5th. Talking big is ok, if you win. Being swaggering and overconfident is fine, if you can actually deliver. Tool. He'd better place in the men's downhill combined, or he's gonna end up being even more embarrased.

adidasss 02-12-2006 02:51 PM

so bode is an ass? i always kinda liked him, because he's so good in basically all the disciplines.....i'm sure he's gonna win an event....

jibber 02-12-2006 02:53 PM

he's an amazing skier, don't get me wrong, he's just so cocky. I'd respect him a lot more if he had a humble attitude towards winning. he doesn't, at all.

franscar 02-12-2006 04:10 PM

Jibber, I have a question.

Why don't they just have the guy or gal who jumps the furthest win the ski jumping? Technical jiggery pokery and style points makes it rubbish, I want to see people falling over because they tried to sneak an extra metre dammit.

SaTaNsChIlD666 02-12-2006 04:17 PM

****in USA hockey's gunna take the gold for men and women!

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-12-2006 04:41 PM

I`m bored of it already

How long till the world cup starts?

there is an event like that. It's called ski jumping. I know 2 out of the 4 guys on the canadian ski jump team, I ski with one of them.

haha, not a hope in hell. Canada is favoured to win the gold in both men's and women's. The US isn't even favoured to place at all in the mens. As for womens, ties are determined by total goals scored and against, so canada already has a huge advantage from their 16-0 game against italy and their 12-0 game against russia. We're gonna win gold in both men's and women's.

Merkaba 02-12-2006 06:59 PM

They may as well just call it the Canadian Games:rolleyes:

jibber 02-12-2006 07:07 PM

shaun white is a God, a GOD I say.

(I just saw footage of his winning run, I'd so do him just for that run)

adidasss 02-12-2006 08:02 PM

So I'm watching the men's downhill competition, and my god these guy's are amazing atheletes. Anyone who's taken a run down a race course will agree that it takes serious balls to do what they do. They're flying down what amounts to an insanely steep ice rink at over 100 km/h. I've taken runs down the men's downhill course at Lake Louise, where this year's worl championships were held, and I can safely say there are few moments when I've ever been that scared when I was skiing, and I've had some scary moments. The entire time you're flying down the hill, it's sheer ice, and while you want to bite your edges in and slow down, you know that if you make too much of an adjustment, you're gonna slip out, and you're gonna crash, HARD. Not to mention how insanely stron these guys are. I just watched one guy fly over a jump, good 15 feet (horizontally) and land WAY on the tails of his skis. I've done that, and it takes serious muscle to pull out of a backseat landing, let alone doing it at over 100 km/h.

Spike*Spiegel 02-12-2006 09:50 PM

just wondering adidasss, is there anyone form croatia in the olympics, and if so, who?

jibber 02-12-2006 09:57 PM

HOLY SH*T!!! This is an amazing competition. HUGE upset for Men's Downhill, a french skier, Antoine Deneriaz won the Gold medal, NO one expected him to do so well, props for him. He won by about .74 seconds, HUGE lead, and it was really really unexpected too.

Oh, and spike, croatia has Janica Kostelic, she's competing in all five alpine skiing events, and has come off a major injury and is now a major contender for multiple golds. She won four alpine medals in salt lake, and is one of the most favoured women in the alpine skiing events. The women's events will be interesting to watch, after all the hype around Bode Miller, and after he REALLY didn't deliver, I hope janica lives up to everything being said about her. The good thing is that she's not nearly as ****y as miller, so if she doesn't ski well, it wont make her look as bad.

IamAlejo 02-13-2006 04:43 AM

bode miller goes out partying the night before, then decides to use brand new skies he's never used on one of the biggest days of his career.

and yet i can't even say that's an excuse, that just the way he does things...turned out to **** him over this time
