sunday bloody sunday

from wikipedia:

"On Sunday January 30, 1972, in an incident since known as Bloody Sunday, 14 men and boys were shot dead (one of whom died 4 months later) and 13 others were wounded by British paratroopers after a Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association march in the Bogside area of the city of Derry, Northern Ireland. The march was organized by Derry Stormont MP Ivan Cooper to protest against internment without trial of Irishmen, predominantly Catholic, in Northern Ireland. Critics of the action asserted, as did journalists covering the event, that those shot were all unarmed."

so....on the aniversary of this tragic event, i wanted to get the inside view on the situation and position of northern ireland, we have a lot of brittish people here, i wonder how you feel about that event, how do the irish and the brits on this site feel on the goings on in northern ireland, about the possible unification of the two republics, on the struggles and agendas of the nationalists and the loyalist. do you even care?

although i don't have a deep insight into the situation, i feel that northern ireland is an unnatural creation and one day i hope that it will be reunited the republic of ireland. i'm of catholic descent and so i side with the nationalists ( catholic ).

Hehe, I like that logic there ;)

I've heard post-9/11, that the nationalists want to distance themselves from the "terrorist" label and use non-violent means to get their message across. But if I'm not mistaken, the majority of the country is Unionist. And I've also heard from a friend who used to live in the region that there are several people (especially in the younger generation) who are generally "neutral" on the topic, and just don't want to see any more violence.

well hey man, it's not only that they're catholic, they, just like croatians, have been oppressed by imperialistic pigs for hundreds of years, they're a small nation who's strong catholic faith has helped them maintain their identity despite all attempts to errase them as a seperate nation ( same for croatia ), although unfortunately, the imperial pigs have succeeded in making the irish language virtually dead. the northern irish republic is an unnatural creation because it's essentially a nation/state based on religion and was created because the irish were still in an underhand position back in 1920 and had no choice but to agree to it pressured by the allmighty brittish empire, the presance of protestants in northern ireland is a direct result of the brittish attempt to enslave the irish, they owned all the land and settled there ( therefore making them immigrants ), the island was originally completely irish. besides, i don't see why protestants can't live in a unified irish republic....

but you're right, the majority of the state is unionist....

My dad's family are irish and catholic. I'm all for self-determination so I support that they want freedom.

I've made the mistake of asking an Irishman about the "situation" there. (My school is sorta megadiverse that forigners make up a large portion of our classes. ) Man did I get an earful on that one. Unless you're there, you can never be too sure who to believe.
