Default The Energy Crisis: Are You Worried?

I'm not going to go into too much detail (although this is a topic that I have keen interest in).

Anyone at all concerned about the energy crisis around the corner? The possibilities of oil depletion within the next few decades? The dependence on foreign oil, particularly from potentially dangerous areas in the Middle East and third-world countries? The reality that coal will not last forever?

I watched an unbelivable video called Arithmetic, Population, and Energy, which goes into great detail into Hubbert's Peak Oil theory, which basically says oil production will reach a maximum peak, and eventually can only decline. Experts believe we have either reached this peak or are quickly approaching it. It is also believed about 75% of all available oil has already been discovered, and more than half of the oil supply already used. With overpopulation, and the ever increasing demands of growing economies in China and India, is there a solution, that can prevent a global recession?

Renewable or alternative energy- is there hope?. What's practical, from an environmental and economic standpoint? Solar cells? Corn-based ethanol?

Will we ever see crude oil prices around $10 a barrel? Probably not. Experts believe it will level around $40-50/barrel, but not before it reaches excessive peaks ($120/barrel!). Does Iran and Saudi Arabia have America by the balls?

good god, this topic actually worries the shit out of me.....all i keep hearing is how we'll run out of oil in the next 40 years or so, possibly quicker with china and india in play.....and aparently oil is not only used for gas, everything plastic is a derivative from oil, most of our food ( example, the colours and tastes of juices and what not ) is also made from derivatives of oil....so what alternative is there for that? i'm sure they'll come up with some alternative to oil, i've actually seen a piece about corn based ethanol, seems like a good alternative, although, it's still illegal in france.....go figure....
oh, and my opinion...the world is gonna end when we do run out of oil...

The only problem is, it actually takes more more energy to make corn-based ethanol than the amount of energy you can get from it.

Also, ethanol is only added in small amounts to petroleum (like E-10 that's got 10% ethanol, available at most pumps today). But, there's alternative like E80 (80% ethanol) or 100% ethanol, but they arent practical.

Actually, a pratical alternative for automotive fuel sources is hydrogen, which sounds deangerous but I suppose its no less flamable than gasoline.

The fact is, as China barrels down on super power statues they increase their oil consumption by 60% each year. What I think everyone is worried about is no more oil-based combustible fuel. While I don't know how vital oil is to the eco system (though I'll assume not so much as its miles below the sea bed and top soil) I'd like to see a future where everything related to oil (and its power) is gone. There will be no more giant oil companies, middle-east dynasties, and their will be far less polution. Getting things places will be horrid for awhile, but in close vacinity, ride a bike. I do, even now when its 4 degree's here. Yes it's terrible but maybe we'd all be better off without oil.

Thats just my 2 cents.

What about hydrogen cars. *feels extremely naive to some of the topic*

They are supposed to be rather good and if they are mass produced then there would be one solution to part of the energy crisis.

EDIT: Big3, you stole my 1 cent!

Frankly I think theres too much pissing around in the presense and not enough investment in the future.

At this stage, we now have a rough estimate of when oil will be all gone. It is around this time that new technology should be well under way to replace and conserve the last of the oil. I realise theres wind turbines and all that crap for general power, but theres nothing to replace cognitive machinery, items requiring lubrication that is upto the same standard as the oil we use today.

And it's all a big shitfight right now and people don't seems to realise that no matter who gets the last of the oil, everyone will still be at a loss when it's all used up.

I'm with adidasss, it scares me too, I wish they'd hurry up and start Project "Holy shit somebody do something!"

well ain't that a happy thought...
so , the majority of oil goes for cars no? so perhapse those hybrid thingies can slow down the speed at which we spend oil?....and who the fuck am i kidding, those cars are only for rich people who pretend to care about the enviroment, i doubt some dude from india is gonna care that we're all gonna die in 40 years because of a massive world war for scarse oil reserves......*is paranoid*

bottom line, hookers, the world depends on you to solve this for us.....or humanity will seace to exist.......

but no pressure or anything.....take your time....

We had some uni students overhere make a normal car run off water.

Obviously though oil couldn't be totally excluded, just the use of petroleum.

A few of my classmates have been researching that possibility, unfortunately i know very little about the possibilities.

Big3, I agree, but it just sounds too perfect. It seems like a global recession will come much quicker than a complete independence from oil and the effective use of other fuel sources.

Yes but the globe needs recession. I mean, the way things are going now, even if oil lasted another 500 years, something else would break down.

Certin countries, like mine, doesn't gorw enough food to support itself. I think it should, and I think we've shoved the american farmer down the stairs in order to get cheaper forign food.

Oil is human greed manifested, and while we know it to be green, I feel the texture and color of oil fits perfectly with my understanding of greed.
