Planes are interesting. The hardest work a plane does is take off, flying in the air is a piece of piss and relatively conservitive when need be. The only factor is the sheer weight that the commercial ones have. It certainly wouldn't be like a glider, it would require some power to keep it aloft. I doubt solar would ever be considered, you could cover the entire plane in panels and it'd still plummet to the ground.
