Only you can prevent forest fires...
But only MB can prevent newb flamming.
I was going to write this last night, but I figured it would come out...wrong. Theres somethings you have to learn over time, but heres some quick "cut to the chase" things you can do to not appear so green: 1. Your location: No one thinks its funny or interesting if you have something other than your actual location. Everyones first inclination is to put something mysterious or poetic. But you know what, we've seen it all. "Trapped in my own mind", "Hell", or "song reference that is non-specific". If you don't want to put where you live, then don't. I don't know what the point of that other crap is, but people either ignore it, or think its stupid. 2. If there was a misunderstanding, or you are trying to dig yourself out of a hole, don't end your responce thread with incindeary. People aren't ever going to get "burned" bad enough to stop fighitng back. More people will get fed up with you and go on the attack. You're new remember, you don't have friends yet. 3. On topic is always a good idea for your first month here, get established as someone credible and sane before you go off the deep end attacking people with non-sensical gibberish. Most times people here are referencing inside jokes or stuff like that. Everyone here is sarcastic. Don't take offence to something someone said to you, if you "get the joke" or at least pretend to and laugh at it, we'll like you more. 4. For god's sake be open minded. Or at least don't empire build with your closed mindedness. We all like most of the major bands. We're heard what we like, we're not going to be persuaded by someone who likes something alot and rams it down our throat on a constant basis. We are apparently rid of one of those, we'd like not to see anymore. If you can think of anymore, please help the community in giving our newblets some insight. That idiot telling me that The Knack is the greatest band ever may one day contribute something intelligent to the conversation. |
Great points there Big3. The best being

well its true, and to elaborate on that, there aren't people who know you're not a ****head. If thats wall we'e going on, then thats what we think.
|
I don't know about the location thing. I mean, I don't really give a toss where someone lives. The only people that I'd honestly care about where they lived are the ones that stick around. And if they do stick around, we all find out eventually.
And I don't mind if they put a joke or something witty in their location. It's almost showing that they have a personality to look forward to. Kinda ties in with the sarcasm statement you made. As in, you'll be in better light if you can laugh something off. I'm all for humour. More so then knowing someone lives 6 seas away. But I agree, if you're going to put "hell" please don't. It's not worth the effort of writing those four letters. |
i nominate this for being stickied. good thread. definitely a good "welcome" sign for the newbies.
as for the location....well..i thought mine was funny when i joined.. and i just havent bothered to change it. |
Quote:
I also nominate this for being stickied, would have been good to have when I joined (even though I am still new) |
personally i have no inclination to change it. ive never been flamed for it. in fact no ones ever said anything to me about it. and if people dont already know that i live in san diego, california.....then they dont deserve to know...or dont care.
|
My point in that was, some people have things that only compound their newbality. That humerous location is one of them. If I have something stupid and I write logical things, no one is going to care. But rare is the newb that writes something intelligent. Be honest. This thread was designed to get the heat off of them.
Now post more information to help them out and quit btiching at eash other. |

I'm not sucking up either. I too nominate it to be stickied. |

I can't think of any respected member here that would wander into a thread, see a crap attempt at a location and flame them for it. It just doesn't happen and if it did, there would be no mass swarming of respected members. We aren't that elitest here. I don't think thats what the big3 meant at all. Especially after the upheavel this forum has gone through in the last month in an attempt to make the joining of a new person more welcoming. |

Ah don't take it like that. You could be right. I was just typing what i thought.
|
I agree with this, but while were on the subject of flaming noobs i dont think we should should point fingers (not saying anyone did) at people who flame noobs cause to be honest alot of noobs can be total idiots. The location thing is kind of petty big3 and its not that big of a thing i mean if its something totally stupid like "i own all your bases" then i suppose its lame, but usually its not that bad.
I think you should add proper spelling to that list, because alot of noobs get attacked just because they're like "omg liek u suk" and yes, thats annoying. |
Or.....
The excessive use of smileys really annoys me. |
^That too, and quoteing a post, and just restating what it says with different words, thats annoying.
|
word.
1. before you reach at least 100-200 posts, and have made somewhat of a name for yourself and established that you have some knowledge of music, before you begin making posts that are abrasive towards others. if you do this too early...people will think of you as a closed minded, ignorant fool, and will form an opinion on you that you do not want pinned on you. especially by the more respected and well known members. 2. dont use internet lingo. it makes you look like an imbecile. dont spell the word "like" this way :"lyke". dont use the word "no" or "kno" as a substitute for the word "know". if they are mistakes, that will be obvious, but typing like that is an instant notifier that you are not smart. 3. making comments that a complete genre "sucks" is ignorant. you will immediately be known as a spammer. if you dont like a genre, dont post in its corresonding forum |
Just to expand on Perfect's number 2 rule. Don't use the form of "internet Lingo" regarded to as Leet Speak. More on the subject here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet_speak God that is what annoys me the most.
|
I agree with everything said
|
OK thats the way, its not me adding to my list, its us, as a music community adding things.
The location thing (i'll repeat) is not something thats obnoxious on its own, but something that adds to other things. I've written this about 5 posts in (roughly) but why read things? Anywho, all these suggestions are just that, suggestions. No one has to follow them. Its just a clue in as to what is or is not going to fly well here. |
more to add.
4. If you come off as an elitist prick, the rest of the forum members are going to be elitist pricks toward you. - do not make posts such as; Quote:
5. read the *Education* threads. one of the biggest mistakes a newbie can make that will get (him/her)self flamed is to misclassify a band. especially the bands that take on the image of a genre but are infact poppy mainstream. -green day (although their older albums somewhat fit the genre of pop punk) is not a punk band. along with good charlotte, fallout boy, etc. -my chemical romance, the used, etc..are not emo. -do not classify the genre known as "emo" by the trend that has become ever so popular lately. that is a fashion trend that many bands have used as a stepping stool to get themselves noticed. bands such as hawthorne heights. true emo is not what the media portrays it as. most real emo bands are not very well known by the people who watch MTV as a source of music. 6. dont intentionally start petty arguments and try to shut down or out witt the members that take your bait. this will get you known as a spammer from early on, and thats not something you want happening. in many cases the members that argue with you (assuming the argument is about a musical genre, for example) will know more about the genre than you. dont take this as a bad thing. it is an opportunity to learn, and to expand your musical knowledge. |
Eee...all I see is do this, do that.
I mean sure give 'em some guidence, but if you go over board the n00bs wont bother reading it and it will be a waste of time. I mean who really reads the intruction booklet before they do something? I say make a most important top five and leave it at that. |

What instructions? |

Some people take internet forums way too seriously.

Whatever, I think people who are new to this forum should just say what they like and be honest. I'd respect a person more for being honest than inflating the older members egos

Im with pretty much everything on this thread, nicely done ...
But, I have to say one thing about this first: Quote:
Anyway, thats all I have to nitpick about. |
again though...im not being a spelling nazi. this is meant to inform the newbies... and im cluing them in to what pisses other members off.
|
C'mon Big3, all the 'older' members know this board's always had a problem with newbies. The problem is that when one c0cks up, every one else rips their genitles off (myself included), so we only get stuck with argumentative people, and all the nice ones run. Maybe just a bit of manners would be nice, tis all

Fine, bring it up once to the member, if they dont change, dont bring it up every feckin time they post ¬.¬

Imagine: Official *a band* thread New User: I like *a band* and I love *this song by them*. They have a nice raw sound... Older Member: Dude, *a band* totally sucks. They are not real *a genre*. I could play better than them. I noticed this mostly in the Green Day thread but I have also seen it in other threads about different artists. |

This is one of the many reasons kashmir got flamed its a forum, we dicuss opinions if someone doesn't like a band and they state it and don't attack people for liking them its fine. Seriously this forum would be stupid if everyone was postive towards a band. Diversity is why i like musicbanter. |

And it's not because a noob joins up and says "Greenday is cool". We're hostile to that noob because of the 6000 we've endured before hand. There are the obvious flammers, but on the whole, it is primarily our fault that we don't have the patience to deal with the 6000th noob the way we so nicely dealt with the 1st. In all honesty I'm happy for someone to like Greenday and post "I like Greenday". But it gets really tedious when that person gets flamed to death by the older members because they've all come to an agreeance that Greenday sucks. I think we need to realise it's not illegal to like Greenday. Or whatever band. |
