moley, to answer your question from what i know about sXe.
Its not a new thing, it has been around since the early 80s, maybe sooner. It was a movement of sorts, then died down, and has recently been making a comeback (again, this is just from what ive witnessed being in the punk scene for over 13 years) most of the music is just as you explained, sort of a dropped down east coast hardcore knock off. Mostly nowdays its all about the crews. Plenty of kids dont drink or smoke but youll find its the ones that go around claiming sXe that seem to be apart of these crews that are in some cases worst than any gangmember, religious nut, or nazi. Minor Threat did have some good lyrics, but i wouldnt put them on a pedistal, ive seen Ian Mckay drink.

Straight edge was pioneered by Minor Threat, although they aren't really a straight edge band as such. It was the early 80s when they formed and were only around for a few years. Ian Mackaye (Minor Threat vocalist) was writing lyrics, some about drugs for himself and nobody else. That's why from what I gather Ian and Minor Threat really didn't want what was to come with the straight edge movement and so forth. Another distinct difference is Minor Threat wasn't as 'hardline' as alot of the bands to come were. What I understand is Minor Threat lyrics were more directed at drug addicts not casual drug users and Ian not wanting anything to do with them etc.

an interesting topic sXe is. i personally think it that's what people want to do then thats fine. the thing that annoys me is when they all go around wearing ****ing X's and preaching about how bad drugs and **** are. i mean i dont go around with weed symbols on my hand telling everyone to smoke up. in summing up most sXe's are fine, thats their lifestyle, but some are just self righteous pricks who think that they are better than everyone else because they don't do anything bad. and in my honest opinion i think listening to the music they listen to is more damaging that pot. but hey dont get angry at me guys, thats just my opinion.
