"Merry Christmas" vs "Happy Holidays"

there is this big controversy over sayig "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays". In our wal-mart we aren't aloud to say "Merry Christmas". We have to say "Happy Holidays". Apparently some people get offended by merry christmas. personly i don't think we should have to stop saying it because it has the word christ in it. what do yall think?

madeinNY 12-15-2005 12:44 PM

HAHA you should say happy exmass and then see what damn walmart says.

right-track 12-15-2005 12:58 PM

This type of political correctness really gets up my nose.

Through personal experience I've found that the perception of offending non christians is unfounded.

Asians for example are not offended by christmas, but by assuming they are, only fuels resentment amongst rascists and the ignorant.

The whole exersize is counterproductive.

Should'nt this thread be in the lounge?

riseagainstrocks 12-15-2005 01:37 PM

^I agree.

It's really lame. I can't think of a non-Christian friend on mine who gets offended by Merry Christmas. It's the meaning behind the meaning that people don't get. Its a wish for happiness and joy. Not only on Christmas day, but throught the year. Political Correctness it's getting outta hand.

IamAlejo 12-15-2005 02:02 PM

Just recently some of Bush strongest supporters got pissed at him cause he sent out holiday cards saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas"...which seems odd, since he used so much of the strong religious background to get elected, then doesn't have the backbone to put it on a damn Christmas card to his supporters.

did yours also say happy holidays?;)

Political correctness is so dull.....

Imonlydancing 12-15-2005 02:14 PM

We don't say happy holidays in England.
So yeah.
I spose 'happy christmas' is not offending...
some people of other religions are allowed to miss the church service we have at school.
hmm.

How excited my kids will be on 'holiday' eve, as they lie in their beds waiting with anticipation for 'holiday' day to dawn.

The look on their faces as they see the mountain of 'holiday' presents piled high, underneath the undecorated 'holiday' tree.

The joy at the knowledge, that Father Holiday has not forgotten them.

The magic and wonder that is 'holiday day'.

It just makes me laugh how LOL isn't a proper word.

haha.
LOLing.

Sneer 12-15-2005 03:22 PM

im pro "merry christmas". im sorry but fuck political correrectness when their taking away an age-old tradition. "happy holidays" just makes it sound like a generic, unimportant occasion while in reality its the most special time of the year. if people of a different creed or race want to piss and moan about it because it conflicts against their beliefs they should go back to their own bloody country. and that isnt a racist comment, its called using logic.

madeinNY 12-15-2005 03:22 PM

lol.

I describe it like that too! And whenver anyone in real life says something funny, the first thing that comes to my mind is "lol"

Thats only if you're christian. Surely.
I bet people who aren't 'christian' and have really strong beliefs for their own religion don't like saying 'merry christmas'
but, i think 'happy holidays' sounds american. & I don't want to sound american. I'm english.

Sorry if this makes no sense. Im very tired.

madeinNY 12-15-2005 03:25 PM

I have no religion and I prefer Merry Christmas to Happy frikken Holidays which just sounds ghey...no offence to users.

Let's stop with the lols.

sleepy jack 12-15-2005 03:26 PM

I think instead of whining and trying to satisfy every whiny athiest the goverment should do more important things. Like busting child pornography and killing super villians (venom is on t3h loose).

Sneer 12-15-2005 03:27 PM

christmas is a christian holiday though. how can they rob a faith of its sacred occasion just because they dont agree with it?

Imonlydancing 12-15-2005 03:28 PM

I thought Jesus was really Jewish anyway?

sleepy jack 12-15-2005 03:28 PM

^yes.

Even if it is. Half the people celebrating it dont care about jesus and christmas has turned into something totally not christian.
Sinces its barely a christmas holiday why bitch?
Even if it is christmas you still have holiday and holi = holy.
Just as bad.

madeinNY 12-15-2005 03:29 PM

Stu, I celebrate chrismas and I'm not a christian.

Most of my school celebrates christmas and most of them aren't christian either.

Jesus was Jewish.

Imonlydancing 12-15-2005 03:31 PM

I thought he was Jewish.
Seems weird really.
I don't understand all of it anyways.
I'm athiest. Until I decide otherwise anyways.

your misinterpreting what i said completely. i didnt say christmas should be strictly exclusive to christians. i simply said governments shouldnt have the right to change an age old tradition derived from christians- the followers of christ. yes jesus was a jew, but christianity's roots start with him and his followers.

sleepy jack 12-15-2005 03:41 PM

You know, i think christians should get back and say "im offended by the fact im not allowed to talk about my holiday in public" i mean its hypocritical to tell them they can't say this cause it offends the athiests, when it could just as easily offend the christians.

madeinNY 12-15-2005 03:43 PM

I was answering ImOnlyDancing's question when I said, "Jesus was Jewish.", by the way.

Ohh...Ok I misread your post then...my bad.

I think it's nice to respect other cultures and stuff-- but, I get offended when some Christians in America can't say "Merry Christmas!". I'm gonna say merry Christmas forever. :)

Decoy 12-16-2005 07:23 PM
