I'm gonna have to go with LOTR on this one. Matrix was a very cool idea. It was fresh and had a computer nerd like me very attentive but in the first movie when Trinity brings in the love stuff... I really think the Matrix went down hill from there. I'm not saying love sucks in a movie but whenever love came into the picture in the Matrix movies I found it very cheesy and almost forced... like the writers thought they needed to have some love angle in order to make it a good movie. If they had kept it to one movie... I would have thought it was an awesome project but they couldn't leave well enough alone.
Although I'm not really into the LOTR genre (makes me think Dungeons and Dragons and turn based role playing games like that) I think the movie was well written and even better done. There were so many plots going on at one time and none of them were at all slow. PLUS! With me standing at a commanding 5'5" (That's 1651mm :P)... you gotta love a story where short people save the day.

LOTR was written by JRR Tolkien, a master author and linguist. The matrix was good but as a trilogy it sucks arse. LOTR is actually just one book split into three, it flows well and has and eneding which raps everything up. The matrix leaves so many questions unanswered and the final two movies just seem to be an excuse to use cool effects.
LOTR owns Matrix

LOTR definitely. its also alot better if you've read the books b4 you see the movie, well i dunno, maybe thats just me. i'm not a big matrix fan, i honestly think that the actors kinda suck, and alot of times they put in the little sappy trinity-noe scenes that just seemed cheesy to me.

both so good it's hard to say, it really depends on what you like more,
fantasy or sci-fi but me personally I like both so it's hard to choose one heh heh

Lord of the Rings is more popular world wide and has a lot higher fanbase from the great books and Tolkien's ideas are basically the standard for all fantasy video games there are today.
whereas Matrix has created a whole new realm of futuristic thought and really created a great story within itself to relate to the real world and how our world could be or really is. You can't really picture yourself being in Lord of the Rings because it's all fantasy but the Matrix is so realistic that it could possibly happen or BE happening

The first movie The Matrix is completely one of my favorites, and i'd pick it over any one of the Lotr movies, but since we're stacking up trilogies I have to go Lotr
