Not many people had heard of Bluesky when the Twitter side project made its debut as a separate company in 2021. The decentralized social media platform initially flew under the radar, but user numbers skyrocketed after the U.S. election in November. This was largely because many of X’s users fled to Bluesky, as they were unhappy with some of the changes that Elon Musk made to Twitter after he acquired it in 2022 and later renamed it X. Bluesky now has over 27 million users, but whether it can continue its rapid growth and compete with the likes of Musk’s X and Meta and Mark Zuckerberg’s Threads remains to be seen.

Chapters:
00:00 - 2:00 Introduction
2:01 - 3:15 Twitter’s hatchling
3:16 - 7:51 Power to the people
7:52 - 10:01 Bluesky takes off
10:02 - 13:37 What’s next?

USAID was founded in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy as a way to exert American strength abroad and had only accounted for less than 1% of the federal budget before the Trump administration began its campaign to dismantle it. It isn't clear why this sliver of spending is the first focus of the so-called efficiency project, but it feels like a demolition — and perhaps a preview of the future for other public servants.

Seeking a little escapism right now, so I've returned to this old Tom Waits clip from Fernwood 2 Night.

For those who don't know, Fernwood 2 Night was a short-lived fictional talk show created by Norman Lear in 1977 as a summer replacement for Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, set in the fictional town of Fernwood, Ohio. The "hosts" are Barth Gimble (Martin Mull) and Jerry Hubbard (Fred Willard). They had a variety of guests on the show and it became so popular, they revamped it for a second season in 1978 as America 2 Night. Nick at Nite and TVLand aired re-runs of the show, but as far as I know, it's never hit streaming services.

This clip is a gem.

I never watched Fernwood/America 2 Night but I remember seeing Martin Mull on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. Few people know that Mull was a musician before he hit into acting full time. He and his band were solid musically. They did a lot of funny tunes.

"Barth Gimble," the host character Mull created for Fernwood 2 Night is the twin brother of Garth Gimble from Mary Hartman. Fernwood is the fictional town where both shows are set. Although when the show was revived in '78 as America 2 Night, the location changed to the fictional town of Alta Coma, California, the "unfinished furniture capital of the world."
