Dark, shady sounding snare brushing 60's jazz

I remember a couple of times hearing some really obscure sounding brushy jazz on some 'artsy' radio channel, back in early to mid 80's when I was a kid. I was about 6 years old and it sounded spooky, and VERY illegal. Far from anything that would be a popular jazz sound at the time. Probably more so in the 60's or 70's. Not like the italian library crime jazz either. Darker, less soundtracky, more real jazz or fusion and much less easy listening.

I've never heard anything remotely similar except that brushy snare drumming in the Twin Peaks series. The Bookhouse Boys track is the best example. It's a nice track, but the mood is even better captured in the episodes where it's just a snare drum played with brushes, totally alone. Shady, spooky and «criminal» sounding, if that makes any sense.

Anyone care to suggest some tracks to check out?

No not really. More hectic, mean and dryggy. But thanks for trying to help :)

Just remembered the name of the other song that has some resemblence to the vibe I'm talking about.

Listen to the first minute. It's pretty cool until the sax and the artificial bass comes in and the song starts going all electro cheese cake.

You'll have to copy and paste the name of the song, as I'm new to the forum and not allowed to post youtube clips yet:

Amon Tobin - Stoney Street
