Brian Chase, Rob Reich, Ben Goldberg - Title of Work Mad excellent, can't find any links but it's on Spots. Features interesting use of what I think is a melodica. |

Spoiler for album art:
The Other Side of Time by Quin Kirchner I’m very enthusiastic about this release. This could end up being one of my favorites this year, in fact. It combines the party feel a large street ensemble with the intimacy of an excellent band busting at the seems with excitement for bop pushing the boundaries into free. This is deeply Chicago in spirit but listening to this record gets you pumping like if you’re hoping around the outskirts of the French Quarter and bump into a band that’s like ten times better than anything you expected to see. Kirchner is the percussionist and occasionally reminds the listener why it’s his band with some fantastic drum grooves. The album includes standards (and I’m intentionally using that word) by Paul Motian, Andrew Hill, Sun Ra, and Mingus. All tracks, original or not, rage. Finally, the definitive Art Ensemble of Chicago flag is on full display here. These guys are ****ing torch bearers. Bass clarinet and flute both going off at the same time, yes sir! Absolutely deep dish delicious. Major props! |

Teenage Burnout - los (February 9, 2018) Quote:
Improvisational free jazz from a trio whose web presence appears to be limited to self-promotion. Hopefully, this recording picks up some steam. Their sound mostly stems from the Ornette tradition. I especially like the discipline on display by Stewart-Robinson. He plays free JAZZ. No funk/punk fusion bull****. He molds his playing to the style and doesn’t let the nature of the instrument override the mood or the sound. Not the spiciest or heaviest chops but good music that successfully accomplishes what it sets out to do. From the notes it doesn’t appear like these guys are working together regularly. That’s too bad. I think there’s more potential here. https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7140/7...98d84e31_z.jpg Edit: a couple weeks later I found this review on another record involving Josh Sinton http://www.freejazzblog.org/2018/02/...cords.html?m=1 Quote:

I know that the life I’m currently living is unsustainable but for the time being scouring for new free jazz releases available for online streaming every ****ing day is the most gratifying way I’ve spent my time in ages. This came out today.
william hooker trio remembering https://hookertrio.bandcamp.com/releases No pussyfooting here. Strait up all three musicians absolutely shred on this record. I’m sorry for being a broken record but it’s hard to come up with **** to say. 5/5. Will be a contender for AOTY - by me at least. Spoiler for cassette:

Susana Santos Silva - All the Rivers – Live at Panteão Nacional (Clean Feed, 2018) Those who take interest in how the musicians of Evan Parker: September Winds dealt with the challenges and unique opportunities of recording in an empty water reservoir will likely find themselves intrigued with the challenging acoustics of Lisbon’s Church of Santa Engrácia where this brilliant and beautiful work was recorded. Also like September Winds, All the Rivers is contemporary classical third stream free jazz. Dig on it when you get the chance. 5/5 https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped..._Fora_zoom.JPG Igreja de Santa Engrácia Panteão Nacional |
