His playing when at full force reminds me of Colin Stetson and the way he transitions reminds me of Sun Ra. The Chinese cassette presentation adds even more intrigue. Nice one.

Meteorological Interlude - Johan Berke Upstairs Five plays Weather Report by Johan Berke Upstairs Five
https://johanberke.bandcamp.com/albu...weather-report If you’re in the mood for some Weather Report but want a little change up in exchange for the quality of the real McCoy this is what’s up. It’s passable for sure but it’s not like my Weather Report records are worn out. In other words, I don’t see where the interpretation that’s supposed to draw me to this is. It’s still pretty good though. Like if I saw this band playing in a hotel bar I just stumbled into I’d be like hot damn. You know what I’m saying unless you’re lucky enough to live somewhere that actually has decent jazz on the reg. In America, that’s not you unless you’re in Brooklyn.

To get a jazz gig in the US, you're only allowed to play this song
Theme Piano Solo Theme Horn Solo (repeat until each horn player gets a solo) Theme Drum Solo Theme Or you can bring in your girlfriend and have her spit on Nina Simone's grave.

Tyshawn Sorey - Pillars
I’m just checking this out. I think it’s just out today. This guy has a hell of a resume. He played on Roscoe Mitchell’s Bells for the South Side which is my pick for 2017 #1 AOTY. Spotify says this is over 3 hours so I guess that’s got me covered until supper.

Tonus - Cagean Morphology
https://newwaveofjazz.bandcamp.com/a...ean-morphology This band released three records yesterday but I decided to focus on this one. As the name implies it’s an extension on the musical philosophies of John Cage. Not saying it’s in the same league but it could be a sequel to John Cage Meets Sun Ra. Extremely sparse with long stretches of silence between the notes. Even though Sun Ra doesn’t often really sound like this if I had to stretch far enough to find roots in jazz I would say it’s in Sun Ra’s knowing when not to play. More firmly rooted in 20th C classical and specifically as stated John Cage.

Ammonite by Jason Mears Very cool. Psychedelic free jazz. Like Pharoah Sanders jamming with early Pink Floyd.
