Welcome to MB, TinySickTears!
I saw your post in the Zappa thread, so I thought I'd take your advice here and look for Hiromi on YouTube. Here's your first recommendation:- She's quite a stylish performer, and this sounds pretty good, although personally I don't usually have the patience to listen to solo jazz piano. Anyway, I hope you enjoy MB, and post us some more recommendations, though you may find that some of the music sections are rather quiet these days. :( |
I saw her about 10 years ago at Club Iridium in NYC. She opened for Billy Cobham. She has definite skills but performance that night seemed a little disjointed. She was young and was opening for a fusion icon with a monster band that night (g, Frank Gambale; k, Tom Coster; b, Victor Bailey). Since then her playing appears much more focused.

I wonder how big the club was, dwill? Because I can imagine that being a problem too; it's not easy to get a big boiterous crowd to calm down for her kind of music. Oddly enough, I heard an interview a while ago with Dave Brubeck who once had a similar prob, but worse; him and his piano were headlining after a noisy band and he was terrified that he would be an anti-climax. Luckily for him, he did a great job and got a standing ovation. Well, at his best, DB can draw you in, get you relaxed, then blow your head off with some great jazz jamming!
BTW, if a mod passes by, perhaps they'd be kind enough to do some thread merging with this one of Chula's: http://www.musicbanter.com/jazz-blues/80327-hiromi.html A tidy forum is a happy forum! :thumb: |

I've seen a few performances of YT. A great jazz and fusion player but she bores me to tears.
