Default Kamasi Washington

Just released (or leaked?) his album - The Epic.

Here's an extract from the official album page http://www.brainfeedersite.com/2015/...epic-05-05-15/ :

Quote:
The Epic is a 172-minute, three-volume set that includes a 32-piece orchestra, a 20-person choir, and 17 songs overlaid with a compositional score written by Washington. Pulsing underneath is an otherworldly ten-piece band, each member of which is individually regarded as among the best young musicians on the planet – including bassist Thundercat and his brother, drummer Ronald Bruner Jr., bassist (yes, there are two) Miles Mosley, drummer Tony Austin (of course there are two), keyboard player Brandon Coleman, pianist Cameron Graves, and trombonist Ryan Porter. Patrice Quinn’s ethereal vocals round out the ensemble.
Oh, and it's pretty fantastic.

I hope it lives up to all that build up. That 14 minute teaser is pretty good.

This quite clearly is some of the best Jazz I've heard in years. 3 hours though is a lot of time to be listening to it.

As a whole it doesn't really blow me away. Listening to one of the parts (especially the middle) is great though.

I listened to the first hour and I'm not really into it - like, it's fine, but it's a little too smooth at times and there's no reason not to just listen to Pharoah Sanders or either Coltrane instead. It's too bad, because it's very much my thing and if it were done better/more originally I could see myself loving it.

^That's a shame, the second hour is the best. It's not the most inventive jazz out there, but it's still really solid.

I'll give the rest of it a listen at some point. I'll try it on headphones, maybe that'll help.
