Elvin Jones practically owned A Love Supreme.

I never would ever express it like that out of respect for Coltrane who owns every sound he's associated with.

But it is very important to pay close attention to the drums on A Love Supreme. The drum work is, of course, extraordinary.

Well he did surround himself with the best musicians. I can't think of any of his albums where one of his band members was having an off day.

Elvin and McCoy are both all time greatest evers in my opinion.

Elvin Jones had everything. His propulsive polyrhythmic sheets of sound circling over, under, sideways, down in perpetual motion with beautiful tone and melodic color as well.

I love his interplay here with guitarist Sonny Sharrock in '91.

Honorable mention to the unsung Vernel Fournier, a master of time and space and brushwork who played primarily with Ahmad Jamal (who also knew a thing or two about time and space).

David King of The Bad Plus. IMO the Bad Plus are highly underrated. Seriously one of the best contemporary jazz trios this decade and last.

Was telling my buddy at work about this thread. I was scrolling through reading some of the names you guys mentioned and he was surprised that Brian Blade was not mentioned... maybe it just scrolled over it, but the dude is pretty awesome so here:

Wow, maybe one of the best Buddy Rich solos I've seen so far.
