Jazz Is.
For anyone tired of talking about Jazz in the damn past tense. Honor and revere the ancients, but Jazz Is... A thread to talk up the young and the living who are the present and future of the music.

Jazz Is - Jeff Rupert

Jeff Rupert - Cut his teeth with Maynard Ferguson and Mel Tormé. Played all over the world. His current group, The Jazz Professors, hit #6 on the JazzWeek Top50 this year, and he just cut an album with the Happy Feet Jazz Band in Brazil. He's definitely a part of the Jazz Is.

Jazz Is - Ali Jackson

Ali Jackson is one of the best drummers in Jazz today. The anchor of the Jazz Orchestra at Lincoln Center's rhythm section, if Wynton Marsalis thinks you can play, you can play. He has his own quintet from time to time, and he works on a whole mess of other projects. Second generation musician. Cool guy, too!

I think that Matana Roberts is incredible as she has a unique style that's something of a melting pot of jazz influences. She sure knows how to blow that horn too.
Marc Ribot, Jamie Saft, Joey Baron, Uri Caine, Kenny Woolenson, Trevor Dunn, and Cyro Baptista are doing some great things both on their own and as Tzadik's (John Zorn's record label) house musicians that appear on many different records of the label. Here's a song by The Dreamers, which consists of all the musicians I just mentioned including Zorn: |
I uploaded this Serry song. He is vastly unknown, but the term "Jazziz", and the name of the magazine, are taken directly from his second album. This track is from his first album.

If you want some kick ass recent jazz, look no further than Poland's Robotobik:
