I'd nominate Charlie Parker or Jelly Roll Morton before Coltrane but, yeah, I agree with Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis.

Bird was king its too bad he was taken so early by his addiction/Ulcer/Pneumonia. Coltrane by contemporary standards is quite revered. I know the Marsalis bros and Joshua Redman consider him top dog when it comes to bridging the gap. I'd take Parker over anybody in Jazz.

That laugh was intended for the guy who called Ray Charles the king of Jazz.

Had to bump because I saw something about Ray Charles, and now I'm listening to "Georgia on my Mind" probably on repeat.

I second that bump.

Recently saw the film "Ray". Such a great thing which made me love Jamie Foxx.

I love love love Ray Charles. I loved his fusion of gospel and blues. It was such a innovative blending style for its period. I admire that he was persistent with making this particular style of music despite backlash from his church and religious community. Some of my favorites include: You Are Me Sunshine, Georgia, Hit The Road Jack, I Dont Need No Doctor, What I'd Say, America The Beautiful and many more!

I thought this was just the Jazz forum but just realized it is also is combined with the "Blues" genre as well lol. It makes sense that he is in this forum.
