Help! Acid Jazz & Funk Jazz
Hey, new member here looking for some help in finding some new music and artists to listen too, recently come across some Acid Jazz and Funk Jazz (which I never knew existed) and yea I'm loving it, seriously loving it, which is odd seeing I'm into Slayer and other heavy ****.
So can members here throw some names of artists and bands my way in this genre of music please? really like the stuff without singing in it, it's pretty ****ing awesome. |
Try On the Corner by Miles Davis or Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock. For more modern, Combustication by Medeski Martin and Wood is a good choice. Acid Jazz, however, is kind of a vague item. I got into it first for jazz, but found what I was really after was Jazz Fusion.
The first two albums straddle the line between Fusion and Funk. Seeing that you like heavy stuff, you may also try Bitches Brew by Miles Davis. That's turned out to be my favorite jazz album of any kind. |
There are a few great acid jazz series the best being This Is Acid Jazz and The Acid Jazz Test. My favorite is this one:

Just type Acid Jazz into google and you should find some of the 6 billion Acid Jazz compilations out there.

I like Trombone Shorty. Slacker classifies him as acid jazz.
|
Mahavishnu Orchestra check out "The Inner Mounting Flame" (their first album) and "Birds of Fire" (their second album).

I love listening to jazz music. In fact, I have created a mixture of acid and funk jazz... I would shortly post the link here...

I'm currently listening to a 1 hour worth of Acid Jazz, I'm sure if you download Shazam then you'll get the name of the songs :)

There was also the acid jazz label (movement?) in the UK in the 1990s. A bit similar to Brit Funk perhaps.
Bands included 'early' (ahem) Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies, Incognito, The Whole Thing, Mother Earth, Galliano... That was a good period for students! Tracks which got regular ear time were: "Sphynx" - Brand New Heavies "Jacobs Ladder" - Incognito "Music of the Mind" - Jamiroquai "Akimbo" - Simon Bartholomew "Astralisation" - Snowboy "Mr. Jeckle" - Max Beesley's High Vibes "'S All In" - The Whole Thing "Sunship" - Sunship (this is the heavier end, could be house) |
You might also want to check out some of the progressive rock bands from Japan. Some classics like Prism and such and all the artists that are connected with the group.

[QUOTE=Saulaac;2217917]Yeah nice opening track. Funnily enough, I thought I had heard these sounds before, especially the first track of Keep dg-581, and then I remembered hearing "Perpetual (Movement)" from the 1980 Quark album a couple of years ago. What is that, a drop from the tonic down to the diminished 7th or something? Reminds me of many disco funk riffs I heard in clubs but never found out who played em.
Yes most the stuff I mentioned is in one way or another connected to Jun fukamachi. his solo stuff is great also. fukamachi is a rabbit hole of musical exploration. Jun Miyake is something you should check out. I received a tweet back from him regarding his 2 first albums that were ever only released once on LP and they both will be reissued soon on the 40th anniversary ...dive into his stuff. its all over the map , but his first 2 are like 80's supremo :),,he did not specify how they will be reissued but I'm hopping for a digital remaster release, I will buy the vinyl though if thats how they come. |
