on second thought, if he writes a song called i know i'm psychotic and that's reason for the blues i might give him some credit for the depth of introspection that comes from a genuine blues artist.

MIGHT.

and then try to tell me you think this guy is even remotely cool. in the context of hendrix, mayer realistically probably thinks he's not only better but way cooler than hendrix. dude's a dink. i don't care about your chops or your tone. if you're this totally lame, i'm going to bash you every chance i get.

John Mayer has issues, (like ADDDS) he's dating Jessica Simpson and French-kissing a guy who named himself after two women Rosie Perez and Paris Hilton. Maybe in his mind it was ménage à trois.

I think he's capable of boring music.

Very capable.

Yeah he should just pretend to be something he's not and pay people to write politicly correct responses to every question he gets asked. Whether its what he thinks or believes is irrelevant as long as it caters to peoples owns beliefs in how someone should conduct theirself. If you dont like his music cool, but I dont see what type of person he is really has to do with that. If he straightens his self up in what the majority would deem acceptable standards of living, does that make his music any better? No. That was the point I was trying to make earlier and how Hendrix and SRV got brought up. Talent isn't more readily availible to someone because their "such a nice person" Has nothing what so ever to do with it.

that's a totally respectable opinion... personally, i just don't like his music enough to pay attention to it more than his psycho traits.

but i do feel i should say (not really knowing a damn thing about stevie ray vaughn) that hendrix was quite recognized for his ideals, perhaps almost as much as his playing. he had soul. which is to say he had .a. soul. john mayer doesn't have a soul.

I feel the same way. Dude can play no doubt but his poppy blues and whiney voice make me yearn for something different to the ears.

Pop fans, for them image, theartrical performance on stage and off stage antics of their favorite performer is almost inseparable as to why they like their music. Sometimes image, attitude, talent, reputataion & consistancy in making good music (and even personality & person life) is all part and parcel how people view musicians and artist, and why they like them or even don't like them. It's something people do, whether it's done in forming a positive or negative opinion of peformer. What they do outside of playing and recording music (of course) has nothing to do with what it sounds like. But it's people's general veiw point incorperates all kind of things. Someone might like Lady Gaga for her fashion choices, and that has nothing to do with what her songs sounds like. I don't know how anyone would think fashion makes music sound better. So the same with John Mayer, [true] what he does outside of playing, doesn't make a difference with if he makes good music or not. But it doesn't improve the overall opinion of him either.

I didn't like what I heard from John Mayer when I first heard him, my opinion hasn't changed. Finding about weird **** he says hasn't changed it either. I agree with you that any jerk face can be talented. But tbh I don't see John Mayer as talented judging from what I heard. If enough people insist he is, well then I would have to say he has a reputation of being talented.

Well thats the beauty of being able to have your own opinion. I've also talked to people who didn't like SRV and said he played the same riff over and over and over. I use to not be crazy about John Mayer when he first came out but after hearing his take on some blues songs I came around. But thats just me and ultimately has no bearing on the fact of whether or not anyone else will like him. I will venture to say however that if he wasn't such a womanizing kind of "out there" and outspoken prick (not my opinion of him but seems to be the growing concensus) his fan base and popular opinion of him by the majority would drasticly change. I think sometimes whether some realise it or not they let a persons personality and characteristics heavily influence what they think of their talent or capabilitys. If he was a yes'mam no'mam respectful humble guy who spent most all of his time doing charity work for starving kids and adopted every abandoned and abused animal he could (or like most at least pretended to care when cameras are around cause its a tax write off anyway) his music would only be comparable to that of the Beattles and some of the best Blues artists of all time.

lol I don't think so... from what I heard his music it isn't that great. I doubt it would sound any better even if he was a "respectful humble guy." If that was the case and Mayer wasn't the way he is I wouldn't like his music any much more but maybe I would feel sorry for him that he couldn't make decent music. I didn't like John Mayers' music before I knew about all his shenanigans. I don't think learning anything about him (either positive or negative) would change that.

And anyway The Beatles weren't so clean cut - they did drugs - and Leadbelly killed a man, and Michael Jackson was implicated in a scandal. I don't think that people like or dislike their music for those reasons. Both fans and critcis alike know the same thing. If a person doesn't like them they might bring it up, but I can't see making the correlation that that is the reason for not liking their music, maybe it's the reason for not liking them as a person. I can't agree with you that if it wasn't for his his bad public image he would be lauded as the next Beatles.
