I've always loved Brecker's rendition of "Sonnymoon." His improvising is wonderful.

I'm not sure about the saxophonist, but I do enjoy this melody. It's soothing, and I was like drowning in it.:)

John Coltrane & Don Cherry - The Avant-Garde
http://s.discogss.com/image/R-150-11...302909406.jpeg Once again, had no idea this even existed - basically Coltrane playing with Ornette Coleman's band! What a concept! The interesting thing to my ears is that, whereas Miles and Lee Morgan tend to kind of lay down a melodic bed for Trane's bursts of dissonance, here Cherry is the frenetic one, making Coltrane almost sound like the voice of reason. He definitely gets weird (I especially like 'Focus on Sanity'), but it's kind of mellow, in a strange way, especially when compared to Ornette himself. Very interesting juxtaposition of styles. It's stuff like this that makes Jazz such fertile listening ground. |

Listened to this last night! http://www.orbitrecords.com/product/IMG_0907_edited.jpg John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderly. It's as good as it sounds. Nothing particularly new for me, but wonderful bebop from two of the greatest sax players in jazz. |
Wow! yet again - had no idea that existed. Like Trane just went around doing all these little duet records with people. There's another one he did with Monk and apparently, yet another he did with Kenny Burrell. I will definitely add this to my list.

Peter Brotzmann, Paul Nilssen-Love, & Mats Gustafsson - The Fat is Gone
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...c9a/990856.jpg Brilliant modern free improvisation. These three are machines, to say the least. |
Can anyone find me a link to download this album please? I can't find anything. |

I've really been on an Ornette Coleman kick for the past week or so. After listening to Spy vs. Spy by Zorn I looked more into Ornette and found Free Jazz, which is becoming one of my favourite albums. I've listened to this and the first take about five times today, I love it.

Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" is lovely, it partly inspired a short story with a character named Bird Ornette i wrote, though i don't listen to much Yardbird.

right now I'm listening to Euge Groove. Love that sax!

A couple weeks ago, when I was on vacation, I had the opportunity to do something I've wanted to do for a long time: go to a jazz club in Paris. We knew nothing about the person playing except that his music was described as "flamenco jazz". As it turned out, that person was the pianist Dorantes, accompanied by drums, bass, and on one song, a flamenco guitarist. They were fantastic! The club was absolutely packed and I was sitting behind Dorantes, so close I could have patted him on the back, totally transfixed by the way his hands flew across the keys. Amazing, amazing playing. Even aside from the guest guitarist the music really did sound like jazz with a distinct flamenco influence, both in terms of the rhythm and the way he plays piano.
Anyway, here's an example of him playing with a much larger band that's also pretty damn good: Also, this: |
That's really good Jansz, never heard of that guy. I'm going to have to check out some of his work.
And I am listening to the complete sessions for Bitches Brew. Really, is there anything else that needs to be said? |
Probably my favourite Jazz artist. |

I also really like this one: __________ Pharaoh Sanders - You Got To Have Freedom. Bop bop bop doodle do doo. Great. Classic Jazz. Just classic. Knows how to catch you, and swing to it. |

Right now, Gillespie. That solo is perfect, it really is. |
Two of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. An excellent song. Makes me long for a cup of black coffee in a seedy, smoke filled diner, some time in the early hours of the day or late hours of the night, recovering from losing my girl after a bad bender. I only wish the song was longer.
And I was listening to Neneh Cherry & The Thing earlier. On a first listen, pretty damn good. It's like an old lounge band (similar to the one I described above) started listening to free jazz, punk, and hip hop. Good ****. |
Weasel Walter - Mary Halvorson - Peter Evans - "Mechanical Malfunction"
Check this out if you want some awesome tree jazz. |

And this... this is just perfect. Solos are on fire through the whole thing, the percussion is wild, and boy does it swing. This here is a dancin' tune! |
Hard bop is so fun to listen to, and so smooth, that it's difficult to remember that they're playing at a level of skill my pitiful mind can hardly comprehend.
And on that note, when I'm in the mood for some straightforward, no-nonsense jazz, The Jazz Messengers (Horace Silver leading this one) is the group to go to. |
Really digging Chick Corea's "Return to Forever" lately.

Sambossa 5 - Zero Hora
My first samba jazz album. It's pretty good. |
Blue Mitchell's The Thing To Do
One of my top favorite trumpeters. |

Haven't seen the dvd documentary yet but the quality of the music is fantastic. Davis is joined by Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette. What an amazing line-up! |

Joel Frahm and Brad Mehldau- Don't Explain A piano and saxophone duet album. Both of these guys are great, and they play together so well. |
To answer the question, What are you listening to:- Well, I was listening to Dark Horse´s recommendation from Don´t Explain, three times to be precise because I enjoyed it so much. It manages to be light and mellow at the same time; not too busy, but busy enough. In short, a great track.
To move the thread along, this is a jazz fusion band who are re-working the Grateful Dead catalogue. Can´t believe that I haven´t heard their stuff until today:- |
"The New East St. Louis Toodle-o"—Duke Ellington And His Famous Orchestra It's pretty hard to beat this song in terms of sheer melancholic urban mood. Every time I hear it I picture black and white clock towers, midnight funeral processions and the pitter patter of rain on newsboy caps and fedoras. |
Just can't get enough of Dizzy Gillespie. Bird And Diz is always a nice listening experience.
|
Yeah finally someone who's into that bebop stuff, which is surely not that kind of music you listen to along the way. Had a jam on "a night in tunisia" yesterday - diz' version is good but check out art blakey's fabulous drum intro on his version.
|
This song is just too good. |
