The Modern Sound Of Harry Beckett

I was thinking oh ****yeah because this a dub-jazz fusion record produced by the great Adrian Sherwood but it’s too tame to get the the old nutsac tingling.

Well, I started out with Mingus live; drummer Dannie Richmond (December 15, 1931 - March 15, 1988) caught my attention especially, so I segued into an nice interview with him.

^ Really loved this on first listen, particularly Reid's playful open grooves and bassist Werkman's supple lines. I like how this feels "free" and cozy at the same time. Considering buying this one on vinyl.

Just a little intro to Byrd (stuff I didn't know) -

OccultHawk 11-28-2020 02:09 PM

That guy knows so much about jazz, volumes, but he understands and appreciates the progression of it so poorly. He knows and even owns every record that Donald Byrd was even a sideman on but can’t see how bebop and hard bop had to turn into free. It’s like he can’t see that that’s the inevitable mountain top.

He’s still a phenomenal resource but it’s mind boggling how possible it is to miss the forest for the trees.

I know a lot of jazz collectors who fail to see the point in looking for anything other than bop and bop related products.

I don’t mind if that’s their preference. It’s just the inability to see the trajectory that bothers me. It’s sort of like not believing in evolution.

South Africa’s lost jazz history contains many an overlooked classic. But even within that hidden tradition, there are few albums that suffered such an unlucky fate as Spring, the monumental 1968 debut album by pianist Ibrahim Khalil Shihab, formerly Chris Schilder.

Jam reminds me of that moment at Carnegie Hall that woke up the audience and (apparently) the gazillion radio listeners round the U.S. who tuned in that night. They say Krupa played a murderous 20 minute drum solo that woke the dead hall and relaunched Goodman’s band.

Intense like a good Coltrane wail but obviously not as intricate as the God would display. Criss was a cool cat and this track swings hard man dingo.
