Tom Rainey Trio - Combobulated This exceeded from my incredibly high expectations for this lineup and I cannot recommend it enough. Link in photo. |
Not a challenging listen, but some nice jazz from Akalé Wubé. Who? A Paris band formed in 2009 who channel vintage Ethiopian jazz but add some modern touches too. The album starts with a lone flute but fills out with organ, trumpet and stuff like that on most tracks. Sweet all the way imo:-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrXGppxlt1g&t=835s I'm recommending the self-titled 2010 album (yellow star on green background) in case the YouTube link doesn't open. Discogs page: https://www.discogs.com/artist/19848...3%A9-Wub%C3%A9 |
^ Great album!
That was one of my favorite album releases from 2010. Maybe in the top 10 of the year for me. |
^ Good to know that some knows what I'm talking about.

Solo Piano at WKCR, 1977 by Sun Ra
https://sunramusic.bandcamp.com/albu...o-at-wkcr-1977 released March 15, 2019 I know there’s lots to choose from when it comes to Sun Ra’s discography but this one really hits the spot - I listened to it several times this week. I listened to I Roam the Cosmos three times in a row today. Really a blast! https://sunramusic.bandcamp.com/trac...iere-release-1 |

Nik Bärtsch's Ronin Holon Brilliant record. Infectious groove on this one. Later ECM stuff sh*ts on 80's stuff. |
All across the board the last ten years has probably been the best decade in the history of jazz in terms of the sheer volume of fantastic stuff to listen to. The very very best records were mostly in the sixties (or there around) so I’m not going to say we’re in the best era but I definitely think we’re in the second best era. What’s going on now is better than the bebop era even when you take into consideration the pioneering nature of what Bird and Diz were doing. I know that’s a big claim but we’re living in good times. Incredible times.

Susana Santos Silva - All the Rivers – Live at Panteão Nacional (Clean Feed, 2018)
A top ten album of the decade. |
Nff been a long time since I listened to this one. |
Ramsey Lewis greatest hits. Not jazz in the strict sense, I suppose, as many of the tracks are covers of pop hits, but heck, I’ve never cared much for labels. Just good music !
