Duke Ellington
 

Probably the most important Jazz musician around, and quite possibly one of the most important composers of all time. The more I hear about him, Duke 'Edward' Ellington is a man who is increasingly gaining my respect. Free spirited, 100% dedication to his craft. Masterful musician, and top rate pianist.

Found it very odd he didn't have his own thread, so I started one. Anyone else would like to share their thoughts?

Interesting note: during the Depression when almost all Big Band leaders had to disband their orchestras, Duke and his elite soloists (like Hodges, Miley, Strayhorn/composer) all lived without pay in order to keep the orchestra employed and their families fed. That in my opinion is a great Man.

See, that's the thing. From anything I see, he seems to have nothing but the best intentions in what he was trying to do musically. Add that to sheer dedication to his art, and refusal to conform to the trends/whims of his critic, and you have somebody truly amazing.

Yes, I agree.
Another tidbit (I have his autobiography) is that even though Duke had several chances to romance and marry starlets and women of nobleness, he refused saying that it would never be fair to the person because his true love is music.

Yes, Duke Ellington was the most prolific composer in the history of Jazz.

I have to confess that Duke isn't someone I'm likely to reach for when I'm in the mood for jazz, but I have mountains of respect for the guy. And I'm a huge fan of this song:

Duke Ellington's music is not my first choice when I'm in jazz mood, but surely he gave big influence on jazz music. I should pay my respect to this genius guy.

Writing over 1,000 compositions is no small feat. I mean, if all he ever did was "It Don't Mean a Thing...," his contribution to music history would still be undeniable.
