Larger Than Life: It's Big Band Week!

I`m neither a fan nor an expert on Big Band Jazz as a lot of those grand orchestral effects sound rather dull and dated to me.
Dizzy Gillespie, though, could inject some excitement by focusing the sound on his sharp, distinctive trumpet and by including Cuban percussionist Chano Ponzo in his group. Although this track is 63 years old, it still sounds fresh, which is quite an accomplishment. Congratulations to the guys who wrote it; Dizzy and Chano. :- |
This thread wouldn't be complete without Benny Goodman's arrangement of "Sing Sing Sing". Gene Krupa's full-throttle, furious drumming at very end amazes me everything I hear this.

The North Texas State One O'clock Lab Band was a favorite back when I was in music school.
Can't post a link because I'm too new here, but try YouTube for them and the tune "FM." |
I guess Slim Gaillard & the Stargazers would count as well. Par exemple;
