Jazz isn't some roots music like folk, it is allowed to develop different styles.

The classification is certianly difficult. Like other peopl are saying there are a number of smooth jazz artists that do not play "jazz" per-say, but I would consider the genre itself to be jazz all around.

Yes I love smooth jazz over the fast and heavier sound of traditional jazz peices. I don't think there is a total right or wrong in the making of music and it all becomes personal when it comes to what people like and dislike in the music world.
