When I think of Smooth Jazz, I definitely think of Kenny G, or "elevator music". I would consider it as kind of an entry level sub-genre. Technically, it is a branch of jazz, along with its roots of Ragtime and Dixieland. Personally, I believe the gems of jazz were Big-Band Swing and Bebop. It has definitely branched out though (not that it's a bad thing).

As someone who listens to quite a bit of smooth jazz, I can assure all of you that, just like any genre, there's some truly excellent stuff amidst all the elevator muzak.
Take, for example, The Rippingtons. They're like the Mahavishnu Orchestra of smooth jazz.
