Bay Area might be a good bet, as long as you're not living in San Francisco or some expensive suburb. I had a jazz trumpet teacher that used to live in LA but couldn't make a go of it down here and decided to go up north and he seems to doing pretty well.

LA is definitely one of the worst places. With the entertainment industry being what it is there are thousands of really skilled musicians constantly looking for work.

i travelled to the States in july/august and found the best jazz in New Orleans....
cant comment on Chicago because i didnt go there?!
